May or may not be a stupid question but shouldn't all K frame 38/357 cylinders have the bolt notches cut in at the same degree. So, regardless of cylinder, shouldn't they lock up at the same time regardless of what frame they're installed in or does S&W cut the notches to fit a certain frame. Therefore a 357 cylinder should fit a model 10 this of course after the barrel gap is set for the 357 cylinder.

The position of the stop notches has to be consistent so triggers and internal parts all line up in the same spot.
What does change is the recessed magnum cylinder is longer at front and rear although the firing pin lands in the same exact spot.

The exception to the 38 vs 357 cylinder length rule is the model 12 cylinder which is the same length as a non recessed model 19-5 cylinder.

They all lock up at the same spot, except for small variations in frame and cylinder slots. Recesses or forward length of cylinder may change length of cylinder, but the distance from face of recoil shield to stop slots remains the same. That does not apply to the frames that got the longer endurance package stop.

You can fit a recessed model 19 cylinder to a 38 frame. The frame lug needs filed back for the cylinder's extra rearward length of the recesses and the barrel extension needs trimmed for the longer forward length. The stop notches will line up. Been there done that, Ditto recessed 44 mag cylinder (reamed to 45colt) in non recessed 45 acp frame using a 45 acp barrel. Stop notches fine. Once everything else is fit.

Here are 2 10-7 38 special frames that are now using recessed 357 cylinders and 357 barrels 9the top one from a Python) although you could trim back a 38 special barrel and re cut the forcing cone.
