If the mother was using a snub .38 she was out of ammo, and could not have kept firing without a reload. Which she was not in a position to accomplish. From the lack of muzzle flip I have to wonder what ammo she was firing.
But like others here, I won't second-guess them, only salute them for their courage and willingness to open fire in self-defense.
The remotely locked door only seems to be a good idea if the perp can be caught between two doors with bulletproof glass. Or spotted soon enough to shut him out.

Why not just shoot at his head to begin with. One CNS hit and he is down for the count.

Looks to me that the mother was expecting a one shot stop. She would fire a round then stop to look what happened. It's not in all of us to keep pumping away until the target goes down.

Yep, when it comes to handguns, you either disrupt the CNS or create major rapid bleeding.
Also, data has shown that not everyone reacts the same when shot in a non-vital area. Some will quit the fight while others don't even flinch.
A mistake that I don't want to make.....
When the perp was isolated and in front of them, they should have shot either until the threat was stopped or the gun was empty. In this video you can see what is all too real. People don't get shot and fall down. Anybody with sense would be out of there at the first shot. BUT MANY CRIMINALS ARE SENSE-LESS from mindset if not from drugs. Armies have found that sometimes their attackers are so juiced up from getting ready for battle that they don't fall down when shot either.

If you are reverting on muscle memory in critical situations, then proper training is the solution to effective performance. The problem is very few people engage in proper practice. This video is must watch. Pay close attention to what the says at 1:54

So here is my conundrum. I can put 9 .17 HM2s or 9 60 grain .22 LRs into a group I can cover with an Eisenhower Dollar, and I can put 6 .17 HMRs into the same space or 7 .22 WMRs. But I EDC a .38 that I can put 5 shots into a space covered by 125 percent of a hockey puck. If placement is truly king, should I not reconsider, but a 148/150 grain LWC is potent.

If only one of the rounds you mention hits the right place then the fight is stopped, so I guess....

+1 on the replies noting the proper course would be to empty the guns into BG. Then if he keeps coming, hit him over the head with a half gallon of the cheap stuff (don't waste jameson on the prick). I wonder how many school shooters there would be if each school had a couple dozen staff members like these two ladies?
