I was at Barnes & Noble in Lincoln today and it looks like LP records are coming back at $25 or more each. I sold all of my LP's (over a 100 of them) and a Dual 1219 turntable for $100 20 years ago.

I bought the turntable at the base audio club for a $100 and that didn't include the cartridge which was another $25. the LP's were bought off base at record store for military and dependents only and you would have to look real hard to spend more than $3 for an LP. the LP's were only played once when I recorded them on to reel to reel tapes.

I had a Teac 4010SL tape deck and the only way I could get rid of it was to give it away and I had to deliver it. that damn thing was heavy(it must have weighed 50 pounds. I think it was about $250 at the audio club. thank goodness the audio club was just a block from the barracks. the tape deck was automatic reverse but to do that you had to run the tape completely through , cut and splice the tape so the reversing foil was on the opposite side so the foil would touch the reversing sensor. kind of a pain but when done it was 3 hours of nonstop music

the only thing left are the Bose 501 speakers and they were about $150 each at the audio club.

Were you stationed in Germany where they had audio clubs? I had a small fortune in my stereo from there (Rhein Main '84-'88), only to give most away years later. Yamaha control and power amps, Teac cassette deck, technics turntable, Yamaha CD player, DBX range expander, 32 channel equalizer, Bose 601's and 2 sets of 301's. I still have a set of 301's, all of the CDs, and all of the vinyl albums.

I kept about half of what I once had. It is fun to turn vinyl on occasion. I really do not remember what all I had in my collection, so sometimes I'm surprised by my own tastes. :D

Bought a Teak 8" reel to reel when in Nam at the local PX. Unfortunately a little incoming took it out. Doesn't warranty cover that??? :)

Seems like I pull out my old LPs when one of my favorite performers passes away. Sadly, Glenn Frey, Merle Haggard, David Bowie and sax great; Gato Barbieri got serious play time of late.

Still have about 1/2 of my original collection. I got rid of a lot when we moved one time. Wish I never did that. Still have two Technics turntables. Have a lot of cassette tapes also.

I notice the local Half-Price Book Store has a fairly wide selection of NEW vinyl discs for a lot less than $25 (but I have never looked for just who the artists were). Also lots and lots of used vinyl albums, all genres, mainly a few bucks each, and even less when they have their "half of half-price" sales. I still have complete album sets of the Beatles and Rolling Stones on vinyl, but rarely play them. And no, I do not have an original Beatles "Baby Butcher" cover album.

I was at Rhein Main AB from 1970 to 1973. the audio club was a block away. I think every AB had an audio club in those days. the NCO club was just across the street and about half a block west of the barracks

I'LL GET YOU FOR THIS YOU......

Did you take it our on the enemy personally? I reckon a it was better a TEAC deck than yourself, though you may have wondered at the time.:D

I had ONE good turntable left...

I did something stupid and rendered it inoperable. I was think about buying one of those USB machines but I hear that they are awful. I'll just get a REAL turntable one day. I've still got shells and good cartridges if I can find one they work with.

There is nothing like the sound from a vinyl record, higher highs and lower lows. Cd's were clearer sounding but didn't have the range of vinyl, and this new MP3 garbage has no range whatsoever.

Take a good look at some of the vinyl you bought at the audio club (they were an overseas/European thing). Many were the European versions and have different songs on the same American album, the vinyl was also thicker. The BX had American made albums.

....Ah, the famous Galaxy Club! Excellent dinners in the dining room and two bars to choose from. The casual bar with a jukebox and the main lounge with live music and DJ's.

and now Rhein Main AB doesn't except in maybe some history books. airbases at Sembach , Hahn , Bitburg , Zweibucken are gone also. only Ramstein and Spangdahlem are still there and active. Wiesbaden I think is now an army post.
