Newbie needs some help. A friend of mine is on hospice and wanted me to have his mod.28-2. He cant remember when he bought it so i need to see if you guys can help. It is a Highway patrol, Blued. 4" barrel. The serial number is N220440. There really isnt any other marks other than a number 22288 that you can see when you swivel open the cylinder. Also has a straight butt grip not the rolled look to it. Thanks in advance.

Sorry to hear about your friend. My Highway Patrolmen is well used, good amount of holster wear otherwise it is a very fine revolver. Your friend thinks a lot of you to give you a fine revolver as this, treasure it as your friend treasures you.

Your friend has given you a very fine way to remember him.

That in itself is priceless.

+1

I am saddened to hear you are losing a friend but what a keepsake to remember him by.

A friend is priceless. Sorry for the sickness. Stick by him.

Sorry about your friend. Godspeed to him.

FWIW, he's leaving you a very nice gun...a true classic in the S&W line.

If you have any more questions, don't hesitate to ask...

we LOVE the Highway Patrolman!

Ask your friend about every thing he knows and you do not..What he knows will be lost after he pass's....this is from some who has been there...

I am sorry for your loss.

My 28-2 is close in SN to that one...1975-76 is right.

Well i thank everyone for the info and the sentiments. My friend is 86 and has owned his own welding shop since ive known him. Im only 38 but we hit it off pretty good. Best thing about Mr. Nye is that he hasn't lost his mental snap and can tell you about the way things used to be.The world is truly losing a man that you just can't find these days. Up until this year he would open his shop and work until lunch and go home take a nap and be back to work until dark. Never asked anyone for help and never looked for sympathy. Im going to miss him. Will post pics when my wife finds the camera. Thanks guys.

Congrats to you for seeing the value and wisdom in befriending a man like that. The reason our country is sliding down is that we are losing folks like your friend who made this country great. God bless both of you. I too am 38 and am very fond of folks like your friend who have lived selfless lives and done so much to make this country great.

If your friend will let you, video him talking about whatever he feels like talking about. It's a great way to keep a loved ones memory alive, and even though he's going through this hard time in his life, it may make him feel honored that someone would value his thoughts so much that they would want to record them.

truly sorry to hear about your friend but he left you two things to remember him by: a fine example and a fine weapon. I love the model 28 hence my name, I got mine used from a police officer who bought it when his department transitioned from smith 28's to 9mm beretta handguns. super tight and smooth as silk action. I wish all revolver these days were this well built.

I would love to video tape him but im afraid it would just wear him out. He is dying from congestive heart failure and he tires so easy from talking. Last night he called me and my kids and my wife back in and gave each of them a gift. My wife, model 60 38 spl. My youngest son a Hi-Standard. My oldest son a 10-22. I tried to get him to wait but he blew up on me. It just doesn't feel right taking a mans life belongings and walking out the door. He said that he wanted us to have them and he wanted to be the one to give them instead of his @#$@# lawyer. We talked awhile and he told my son that he traded 18 muskrat pelts for the Hi-Standard. My son had to leave and compose himself but you would have thought he was holding the Holy Grail when he carried the pistol home.

Your friend is a true American, and the kind of man that built this country.

As one of my friends tells me:

"Texas wasn't built by people working 8 to 5 in some government office..".
