Speaking of handguards, I got a laugh out of this. I was flipping thru a gun magazine and there was an ad for Leapers products in there, well of course they have an AR-15 pictured. And what is it but a M&P 15T. I thought that was kinda neat.

The 15T is nice. It comes with a freefloat.

I have the 15T with the Leapers handguard. I guess the best way to describe it is a generation 2. When the 15T first came out, it had Troy Industry's handguards with Troy buis. I think the barrel was chromed on those too. And a different rate of twist, 1/9 I want to say.

OK, I'm trying to figure out how you tell what model you have , I can't find anywhere on the rifle where it is indicated.
Also, trying to determine if a free float handgaurd is better than non free float, I'm not sure what is on it now. Any info would be great, thanks!

OK Hemi392 first a pic would help, second what does it say on top of the barrel in the front sight/gas block and muzzle? Do you have an A2 front sight or a gas block? Do you have a dustcover? Do you have a barrel that is the same dimension all the way to the muzzle or not? What kind of furniture does it have (stocks etc.) What kind of rear sight does it have. Did you buy it new or used? A pic would be really helpful but also can you answer the questions and we can help you. If you didnt buy it new and dont have the box it came with it is hard to tell without seeing it.

If you bought the rifle new in the box, it would have the sticker on the end of it. There is a sku # right under the serial number. Like mine is a sku # 811041. It's still the M&P 15T, but with differences from when it was first introduced. The sku # has changed(think it was 811040) along with the handguard and the iron sights. They used Troy Industries sights and handguards on the first generation. I think that they changed some of the other specs. on the 2nd generation.

As far as the free floating barrrel, if your handguard is in contact with the barrel anywhere other than at the upper receiver, your barrel is not free floating. A floating barrel is generally more accurate because as it heats up from shooting, the metal expands in equal directions. No pressure points to affect the way the barrel moves as it heats up or cools down.
Anyway to see a picture of what you got?
