I got a very late start in trying to accumulate some K-frames so this revolver is pretty Ho-Hum and plain-Jane by SWF standards! I'm a fixed income type so $400 is top dollar for me for a "new" revolver. I picked this one up last week and I think I'm probably at least the third owner. I've spent about three hours on the polished finish - using 3000- and 5000-grit automotive sandpaper. It's cleaning up pretty well but I've got probably two more hours to do on it.
The good news is it's near-new mechanically - strong carry-up on five out of six and reasonably good lock-up. Crane retention is perfect - reasonable finger pressure doesn't force the crane away from the frame. B/C gap and alignment are perfect - and no end-play.
The topstrap was fairly rough with quite a few scratches- so I broke out the 600-grit emery paper and flat-faced hammer. I spent about an hour on it this morning and it's coming around. I found the emery paper tip here on SWF a year or so ago - it will never look exactly like sand-blasting but I've made good progress on it. Probably another hour plus on just the topstrap left to do.
Two questions though. I called S&W last week but the guy I spoke to didn't seem very knowledgeable about barrel swaps. I also have a 3-in M64 and would like to get the same barrel on this one. I am not sure, though, that the frame profile and size/threads/etc on the front are the same as the older Model 64's? S&W lists 3-in M64 barrels, with no restrictions on buying, but I don't know if they are in stock and if one for an older M64 would fit my 64-7.
Second question should be easy given all of the expertise here on SWF, does anyone know what the SKU is a 64-7 like this? Thanks in advance!
