Does anyone own or have experience with a pistol caliber carbine? I've heard they're fun, but that's it.

I want one, and I've pretty much picked out the Beretta Cx4 storm.

A review stated too much recoil on the super light beretta 40 caliber, so I think I'm going with 9mm when I get there

I didn't put much thought into it. I have 3,000 rounds of 9mm and only 650 of 40 S&W. Plus, the LGS only had one and it was in 9mm and 10% off.

Yeah I understand that theory. I traded in an old broken defective 1911, the gun and pawn offered me $400 store credit or $350 cash, and I traded for the ruger Sr9. No research, just "hey that's new and shiny." So that was simply an impulse buy. Later I found a shotgun priced right and in good condition, and bought it, too, but I know my way around a Mossberg 500 so I wouldn't call it entirely impulsive

I had talked to the Just Right Carbine (JRC) guy at the NRA Convention in Houston and had pretty well decided that was what I wanted. Just could not find any at a price I was willing to pay. I shot a High Point Carbine before I bought the JRC.

To me the carbine makes sense, only if it uses common pistol magazines. Kel Tec's sub 2000 is a great concept. It is available for different pistol magazines so you can match your side arm. If only they were easier to find. From what I have seen they could triple their production and never fill the demand. Ed

Yeah my local gun store can't keep them in stock. I've only ever seen 2 in the store. The employee said they always have 15 on backorder, because the bossman wants 15 in stock. As soon as one shows up it's sold

I have had a carbine conversion unit that goes all the way back to when they were sold by Sons of Thunder. Mine uses a .45 1911 lower. They are a blast & very accurate. Quite a bit cheaper that the others too. I imagine a 9mm. with a Glock lower would be good also. I have not seen the Beretta in action.

I own neither, but have shot the Beretta you noted, as well as a Hi-Point 9 mm.

The beretta is much nicer,,although I wasn't googily over either one, honestly.

I mostly like the idea of a pistol caliber carbine as a fun gun. I like the looks and reviews, but I've yet to touch one

The answer you seek is lever guns. :D

Wow, dude. You got it... I do dream of cowboy action shooting but at the moment I'm funding an ar-10 build. After that the toy may be a lever gun.

I'll have to see how attainable that overly dressed Beretta 9mm is.

I have (i know laugh) Hi point carbine in 40 cal. Fun to shoot cheap gun and pretty accurate can group a quarter size at 50 yds.
Fun gun for under 250 bucks.

Buddy has a 357 lever gun that is also a blast to shoot.

BINGO!
I'm in the market for a 357 lever gun right now. Shoot the same 38 spl / 357 mag cartridges in your revolver and your long gun. WIN-WIN!

I've got the Henry 357 on my list, and my hunter gun will most likely be a lever gun. But I've yet to hunt, so maybe next season.

If it's not one of your main guns, cheap and unreliable is acceptable. I've got a carry, car, and home gun. After that I've got my squirrel executioner and a glock. After I get my deer hunter, what other gun has to be nice and expensive, unless it has a real purpose? Every gun outside the list I just made is a toy or a collector's item to me.

Cheap and fun is the way to go, and my girlfriend knows and obeys this rule ;)

Cheap it is
Unreliable it isnt
Ive shot the shiat out of it and it has never had a single malfunction of any sort ever.
I wouldnt hesitate to use it in pretty much any situation if the need arose and it was the only thing at hand.

However you are correct it is not a main gun just a fun gun.

If the need arose and the only thing I had was a club or any gun... The gun either works or becomes a club ;)

I gotcha though. You found a good gun that works for you, and it happens to be a cheapo. What other fun guns have you tried or owned? The discussion turned to lever guns for a minute, and I've got a Henry but haven't done any action style shooting. A bull-pup style gun would fit this theory too, but it's also a serious gun with many applications and real tactical potential.

My 30-30 win
And this one is a fun sorta unusual one swiss K11 also referred to as a 1911 chambered in .308 and converted to a sport in the 60s bought it for 15 bucks in early 70s

My semi and pump action .22s are fun as well and inexpensive to shoot.
