Purchased a nice 4506 yesterday. It was made about 1990 and has the squared trigger guard. SCSW says it is a type 1 trigger guards and the later 4506-1 had a type 3 trigger guard but I can't find a reference to the type 2 trigger guard any place.

If the type 1 was squared and the type 3 was round with checkering in front what did the type 2 look like?

That's a curious oddity about the 3rd Gen guns. Was there a Type 2 trigger guard that never made it to even the prototype stage?

I've seen one reference to a Type 2 trigger guard, but it was vague. I've never seen a picture of a pistol with anything other than either a Type 1 or Type 3 trigger guard. I have a 1989 made 5906 with a Type 1, but all of my other guns, including a very early 3914 had round trigger guards.

The original guns feature a trigger guard with 90 degree machining cuts at both ends. Transitional guns, those with minor changes before the -1 designation, have hooked guards with a curved radius at the ends. This may be what they're referring to.

Second trigger guard is the same length as the First trigger guard with the elongated trigger window except the Second is rounded off and checkered in the front same as the Third. Only ever seen the Second on some 10xx guns, my personal 1006 has the Second trigger guard.

The longer trigger window of the First and Second I find is faster to get on the trigger, especially for big paws.

This is glorious.

Thank your for teaching us something new about these guns. I had no idea there were more than two trigger variations… or that they were numbered.

There were actually 4 trigger guards if you include the 2nd gen pistols, but the O.P. asked about the model 4506 in which case Bill's answer is spot on.
