Retaliation

I have dealt a little with gangs, especially back in the 90's. Home invasions are easier when one knocks on the door, the home owner opens the door expecting a visitor and then the intruders rush the homeowner. Entry is sudden and quiet as opposed to breaking in. Most residents do not go to a door with firearm in hand. Most residents will go for a gun if they hear a window or door being broken into.

Well, if that homeowner gets regular "visits" at 4:40 A.M., visitors that BANG on his door and around in his garage...
you may be onto something.

I don't think you are.

Ashamed and embarassed...

...every time I see or hear a comment made by "The Police" who say citizens should "not resist" and call 911. I have been "the police" for over 34 years and KNOW that officers cannot be everywhere. From my first year, people asked me what they should do...what kind of weapons to own...and how they should cope with a home invasion. I've done my best to suggest what to buy and how to employ their tools to fend off and protect themselves. While retired, I still get those questions and believe me, I find even more reason to protect one's self and home than ever. We can thank the politically correct Liberals of America...including those police officers who prefer a society of sheep instead of lions.

4 am I answer the door with a gun. Frankly I usually always answer the door with a gun concealed. I also live in Denver Metro. We have home invasions here I would guess like most major cities. Most of the time they are after drugs.

My church

There is no law requiring carry by civilians. It is up to the individual. Being religious has nothing to do with carry. My neighbor is pastor of one of the largest churches in the area (400+ active members) and he carries, collects and studies firearms. And not making this a religious thread, the Bible says for us to be armed at all cost.

As to the law not allowing carry, that is a personal decision. You live under the law of the land or move to a different land.

Few young perps begin their occupation fo choice armed. That comes during the late teens when they begin robbing convenience stores.

We attend a large community church with approx 100 LEO members. I have no idea how many CCW's we have in church to include the Pastor. We have LEO's and members with CCW's on the church security team (very high tech). We have sheepdogs who watch over our sheep.

Good Screen Name! I am an old man too, and live in an apartment complex. There is one way in, one way out, through a double lock, one deadbolt. If there are 20 outside to rush they still got to come thru the one way in, and, I do always come to the door armed, with a firearm ready and in my hand. If I thought I could not handle it with a 625-5 S&W 45 or my CA 44 Spl I would get something with higher capacity.Have a few instances where a woman tried lying saying she was from upstairs and her heat was out, but I don't fall for nothing. If her accomplices were waiting outside I am sure she informed them I was heavily armed.

Anybody that's supposed to be here knows the code to the garage. Anyone (day or night) that rings the doorbell gets met by me with my .45Colt. Anyone who rings the doorbell who knows me starts talking very loudly who they are. Simple solution. I go to the door and don't hear anyone talking to me, alert level is already up before door is opened.

We just recently as of last week had a 65 year old gentlemen assaulted while riding his bicycle. He had a CWL and was carrying and he used it! As our local PD now calls them, one of the Actors is now dead, one is in the hospital with a wound to the neck and the third one was captured. The sad part here is that they were all teenagers 15 and 16 year olds. They had just rolled two seniors in a neighboring town and were coming back into the city. All 3 were truant from school and the one killed was on probation for I believe a prior assault.
No charges are being filed against the victim.
I live way outside of the city but one of these kids went to the neighboring school. No matter where you live this stuff is coming to you sooner or later.
I said to my wife after this Now you know why I carry and why I get upset because you don't!
Back in the spring we had our first local attempt to a daytime home invasion which out where I live you never heard of before but the scum are moving out!
No matter where I am on my property I always stay alert as to whats going on around me and there is a weapon at hand!
Sad times we live in and I don't expect it to get better.

I know everyone's situations are different, and coming to the door armed may be exactly what's needed. I only post to add a caution that I maintain when doing so. You never know who may be there obviously, but sometimes it may be an officer of the law, etc, and it's best to have my gun concealed, even when answering the door. Just read an article- yeh, another one- and this is the same thing they were advising. They started by warning of carrying a long gun- then ambled into it's probably best to conceal a pistol as well. Said if it doesn't aPPEAR too threatening, maybe in your holster, if it looked threatening, in your hand, but behind your back. We are all smart enough to know which situation demands which action.

My front door opens into an entry foyer that's separate from the rest of the house. It's pretty tight quarters, and if someone forced the door open, there's little room to maneuver. So when someone knocks on the door, I go to the window (gun in hand) and ask who it is. I'm several feet above them, and can usually see who it is, reflected in the windows of my car. The NRA and S&W stickers on every window are probably also a fair deterrent. And being seen armed and in uniform every day is also a good hint. And when I'm not home, my 19-year old son usually is, and he investigates every odd sound he hears, 357 or shotgun in hand. I don't know what I'm gonna do when he moves out!

I found this thread today and i have some things to add may god bless are citizens who use their guns to defend themselves, may god bless our police officers who do their best to protect and serve their communities and last but by no means least a dead criminal is a good criminal.

+1 for what Oldman said about fighting back! Call it retaliation if you want, but since when did protecting your own (stuff or people) become retaliation! I try to be a quiet Law-abiding citizen and live life to the fullest. But I have what I have because I have worked and saved to get it. I'll be ****ed if i'll let a piece of trash (be it white, brown, or black! all the same no matter what color! Trash is trash!) come in and get it and say "welcome"! I will welcome them, gun in hand, and stand my ground. And, by the way, that sign at the gate that says "you are now in range" means just what it says!

You've obviously missed the point of this thread.

The original point was the BAD GUYS retaliating against the homeowner for fighting back during the original break in.

Actually, i didn't miss the point, I just fell up on my soap box. Sorry that subject is one of my buttons.

Sorry guys. Home Invasions take place much earlier than 4am.

The last one I know of took place just before 10pm.

Criminals may not be smart but they are not stupid. They know home owners are less apt to even answer a door at 4am. They know the police are not are busy at 4am and offer faster response times.

People being mugged at Walmart are not being attacked at 4am but more likely around 8-9pm.

If I were to be doing a home invasion, I would do it either during the day time when occupants are not home or else I would do it about supper time.

Watch the crime reports for your area. See the times crime happens.

Now drug retalitaion is another issue. But they do not knock on doors.

We all have Rural Mailboxes here, usually a walk from the house, mine is about 200 feet from the front door.
Someone evidently was accosted in the process of opening his/her box; my Friend’s Wife remarked that we would all have to go armed when getting our mail.

I said “isn’t everyone”?

I certainly don’t anticipate problems, or as the old sheriff said I would be carrying a rifle.
But there was a pot growing operation down the road and obviously bad actors can be anywhere.

As to whether the guy in the OP was a straight shooter or not, I don’t think it important. Self-defense is not only for the good, this man has every right to self-protection. After all the people breaking in were not serving warrants, nor were they looking for a cup of tea.

I've seen several articles in gan mags that suggest carrying in- and outside the house. Gave examples of stuff like a guy cuting the grass- car pulls up and 2 thugs get out..or sitting on the porch and having them drive by...or any general outdoor chore, you just never know anymore. If nothing else I put my little S&W 32 long in my pocket.

Gun shows and online places offer gun magnets that screw into furniture. They work well, one will handle any pistol, 2 any shotgun or rifle. They are $15-$20 and will allow you to have a gun available indoors at all times. There are also clocks, pictures etc with panels to hide a gun in.

Wear a gun for a little while and you feel odd without it.
