sheared off hammer

I was shooting with my boss and his purchased brand new and less then 300 round though MP1522 performance model.

on the 20th shot it sounded funny and it wouldn't fire. he thought it was jammed. racked the bolt and dropped the mag and it still wouldn't fire. when I picked it up it had an odd rattle. I pushed the pin opened the upper from the lower and a piece fell to the ground.

the hammer was sheared clean off.

gun shop where it was purchased says S&W will not ship them the part and the entire gun has to go back to them.

anyone seen this issue?

the ammo used was CCI valoster (SP) he was sure it was not on the ban list for this model.

I have a camo regular version and the hammer is a much different shape? why is there a difference ?

The PC guns have a different FCG. Fortunately you have a wide choice of FCGs as the 15-22 will accept almost any AR15 FCG. Sounds like a good time to upgrade. Blatant plug for Geissele triggers.

As to S&W not sending parts, this sounds all too much like Rugers' nonsense policies.
 
I received and Email from RRA stating that their 2-stage trigger was not fit for duty in this rifle. That is the trigger that is installed in the PC model.

I don't understand why it will not work in this rifle, I switched my trigger out because it was not covered under the warranty.
 
I think you may be seeing a judgement (by them) as to what they consider SUITABLE in a 15-22 vs what will work.

There's also an issue with hammer fall. FCGs with reduced power hammer springs can have problems igniting rimfire ammo.

I installed a Geissele Super Dynamic 3 Gun trigger in mine. I don't think it's one they "recommend" but I find it well suited to steel challenge and bowling pin events. Good choice on a "plinker"? Might not be.
 
The RRA trigger worked just fine in the 15-22, my non PC version has one installed. It has seen over 10k rounds fired with this trigger group and no issues with it.

There are a few out there that haven't been heat treated correctly and the "sheared hammer" is the result. I-net has a few similar reports. I see 2 options, send it back to S&W for repair or replace it with something else your self. (replacement is not complicated)

I have to admit that I am going to replace mine with a Geissele something or other. Just haven't decided which one yet. (I love the 2 stage trigger)

Not an easy decision as they have many good choices. For action events the single stage short reset seemed the best choice. If I was going for best rested (or off hand) groups the choice would have been a 2 stage.
 
I'm new to this so could smeone post a link to a hammer that would replace the stock one ? how hard is it to change out? is there a youtube video ?

Some time ago I asked S&W about using CCI Velocitor (40 gr bullet at 1435 fps) in my standard model 15-22 and they told me not to. Guess they were right!

But stingers are ok, i have had problems feeding velocitors though.......strange

Yeah, Stingers are on the approved list from S&W. They and Mini-Mags run fine thru mine:)(as well as a lot of other brands:)). The Velocitors have more recoil than the 15-22 spring is designed for.

What about Aguilar super max 1750fps lighter bullet though and also what about rem yellow jackets.what's your experience if any with these in the 15-22?

Experience with these? None I'm afraid. I will say that generically the issue is the bolt back slamming into its' stop. Different ammo will do this to a greater or lesser degree. Reduced power hammer springs will also allow the bolt to slam back harder so that's something to consider if you have (or are considering) an aftermarket FCG.

I'm surprised Wolff doesn't list springs for this gun.
 
There is a such a thing as a lemon, I have fend my 15-22 everything under the sun and it keeps on ticking like a swiss watch.

Doesn't the hammer get cocked by the rearward movement of the slide?
IMBW but the hammer is getting hit with more energy than with lesser powerful ammo. I have a RRA FCG in my MOE 15-22 and have fired about 5K worth of less powerful ammo with no probs.
This all begs the question "Why did RRA sell so many FCG to S&W without studying the adverse effects of Hyper velocity ammo that is available to the general public on it's FCG?"
Hmmm, the thought plickens....;)
