Taylor Swift? I don't get it

I don't know anything about her or any other of the new "Celebs".

When they play the current pop or rap songs in my local Java hut- I tell the coffee girls. "I'll give you 10 dollars to turn that off."

lol

I tried to listen to two of her "Songs" Couldn't take more than twenty seconds of either one. Am I missing something?

I feel the same way. I also felt that way about Nirvana and the whole "grunge" scene - even though I was only 25 years old and living in Seattle at the time they were the latest and greatest.

AFAIAC, Teen-aged angst - ala Ms. Swift, and Cobain & Co. - really only appeals to teenagers - and teenager wannabee adults who (for various reasons) never matured beyond being a 16 year old.

Unfortunately, our once-great society is over-run with such immature pseudo-adults, hence the rampant popularity of Ms. Swift and the whole teen-aged angst music genre.

JMO and YMMV...

Ummnm,OK. Is earnings the ultimate measure of a musician?

If so, there are a lot of the "all-time greats" who fall short on that measure.

I can name a few if you like - though as a musical guru, I'm sure you can name more of them than I can....

At least she's not screaming at the top of her lungs about killing cops or disrespecting her parents or country. Otherwise, I'll just listen to a different station or channel if I don't like the music of whoever is on the air.

NO, but when they acquire deep pockets they can afford lessons with the best of the best.
Some famous recording artists had chops, but many needed lotsa lessons. :D

In the '70s, flute lessons with a symphony player was $50/hour.
The fairly accomplishedr student's school paid $25 and the student the other $25.
As a reedman and fingerpicking fretted string player, I took a lesson with a legit flute/piccolo player.
Never played flute as a young Lad.
We got along well and at the end first lesson he said, $50 for others, but what do you charge for sax and string lessons?
$20 per hour but I usually ran more than 1 hour, as necessary.
He said just $20 per hour for you, and put me on his schedule as his last student. We played duets long after each lesson.

Everyone I studied with is long gone,
so if I call for lessons, beware. :D

Ian Anderson and Herbie Mann got better after lessons and lotsa practice.

Taylor Swift now a class at Harvard.

She's not my demographic or taste in music whatsoever, but she must be doing something right (?) to get academia interested to this extent. So much for Tom Lehrer's "ivy covered professors in ivy-covered halls."

A Harvard Professor Prepares to Teach a New Subject: Taylor Swift

Swift-inspired classes are sweeping colleges across the country.
The syllabus is much like what one might expect from an undergraduate English course, with texts by William Wordsworth, Willa Cather and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. But there is one name on the list that might surprise budding scholars.

Taylor Swift.

In the spring semester, Stephanie Burt, an English professor at Harvard University, will teach a new class, “Taylor Swift and Her World.” Nearly 300 students have enrolled.

The class is part of a wave at academic institutions around the country, including New York University and the University of Texas at Austin. Stanford has invoked the Swift song “All Too Well (Ten Minute Version)” with a course planned for next year titled “All Too Well (Ten Week Version),” and Arizona State University offered a psychology class on Ms. Swift’s work.

Next year, the University of California, Berkeley plans to offer “Artistry and Entrepreneurship: Taylor’s Version,” and the University of Florida will school undergraduates in Ms. Swift’s storytelling...

Whatever floats yer boat! :D
