FWIW. I don't think I've told this here before. It happened in 2012. I was working in Rockingham County NC. There was a murder trial coming up and I was detailed to serve a paper to an eyewitness. Older woman who lived alone. House was out in the sticks, as was most of my jurisdiction.
It was early December and cold. Snow was in the forecast, but that afternoon was sunny. I rolled up to the house and walked up on the porch. Banged on the door and announced myself. No answer. But I could hear a television on inside. Banged again. No answer. I left.
It started snowing later in the afternoon. I decided that since the house was on my way home, I would attempt service one more time. I rolled up and could see the blue hued light of a television coming through the blinds on the front window. I grabbed my Maglite and walked up on the porch. I rapped the flashlight against the door frame and announced myself. I again could hear the television and see its light through the blinds. Nobody came to the door. I gave 5 more forceful raps on the frame and announced again - loudly. No answer. I walked back to the car.
As I got in the front seat of the Crown Vic, I glanced back at the house and saw someone peaking out through the blinds. That annoyed me, but I figured maybe the old gal is hard of hearing. I went back up on the porch and rapped the door frame several times. Loudly. No response at the door. Same blue light and television noise. Cold and wet now, I left.
On my way into the office the next morning, I stopped again and attempted service. You could see the remnants of my foot prints in the snow and the tire tracks from my Crown Vic. No other prints or marks. It was getting light out, but you could faintly see the blue light from the still playing television and I could still hear it when I got up on the porch. Same drill - BANG!BANG!BANG! COME TO THE DOOR! Nothing. No reponse. But I noticed the blue light from the TV was gone and I couldn't hear it anymore. Frustrated, I left.
When I got into the office the secretary called out to me. I went into her office and she said "You still have that Subpeona for the witness in the homicide case?" "I just spoke to her daughter. She passed away last April and the house is vacant now. They have it up for sale."

I just nodded and shrugged. And kept my experience to myself.
