The United Nations acted in 1947 to partition the land then known as Palestine between those residents of Arab descent and those of Jewish descent, then issued the UN mandate creating the modern independent State of Israel in 1949.
The next day armies of 3 powerful surrounding nations attacked and invaded the new Israel and were only defeated very narrowly by the Israeli citizen-soldiers having very little beyond basic small arms (mostly European WW2 surplus and captured weapons smuggled into Israel during the British Mandate years following 1945).
Varying levels of hostilities continued without significant break until the 1973 Yom Kippur attack, with tanks and armored vehicles penetrating deeply into Israeli territory and very nearly succeeding in crushing the new Israeli Defense Forces. Prior to that military invasion the Arab nations warned Arab populations in Israel and urged them to evacuate to neighboring countries so as to allow the "Army of God" unimpeded pathways to victory. Those populations were received in refugee camps with very little sustenance or support from the host nations, and largely left to fester until the current times. Major propaganda value as refugees fleeing tyrannical Israeli treatment.
Terror attacks have been commonplace ever since. Public transportation, schools, and residential areas have been targeted by gunmen, bombers, and suicide attacks. Hamas has been the de facto ruler of Gaza, the modern state of Palestine (forced on Israel by international pressures), as well as much of Syria and Lebanon. Rocket and mortar attacks have been nearly daily events, launched from within cities, town, residential areas, and refugee camps. Not a year has passed without horrific outrages against Israeli civilians, children, and peaceful residential areas.
Militant terrorist activities have been documented within UN relief agencies, Red Cross facilities, schools, and medical facilities. Outside agitators are frequently involved in planning and coordinating the ongoing attacks. Rockets, missiles, artillery, mortars, and small arms are routinely provided to the militant groups and smuggles in to support these groups.
Any attempts by Israel to intervene, retaliate against unceasing attacks, or simply defend sensitive areas are loudly denounced as excessive, heavy-handed, genocidal, and outrageous behavior by the Israeli government.
Constant low-to-high level attacks, endless international pressures, a genuinely no win situation for the Israeli people. They will be damned if they do and butchered if they don't.
After 7 full decades of suffering and restraint I would not be surprised if the Israelis take a very hard line, massive retaliation, perhaps even the forced dislocation of whole populations within the known hot spots. Israel would certainly be denounced loudly and harshly, but that really would be no great change from what occurs daily anyway, and a modicum of peace might be achieved until the next round of the never ending war resumes.
How long would the American people suffer daily armed attacks, suicide bombings, mortar and rocket fire launched from a bordering nation into our cities, towns, schools, and hospitals? The demand for crushing military response would be impossible to ignore.
