I walked into my favorite purveyor of fine firearms today, after a dismal trip to the local gun show, and there it was. The aura of light was blinding. :)

For years one of my "grail" guns has been the 3" Model 640. This one, while not unfired, is very close to it. Unfortunately, the factory box is long gone but it still has the original Morado wood presentation magna grips. The action is smooth as silk and the gun is in perfect condition.

I'll add some pics as soon as I get it cleaned up.

yes, we must have PICS ;) ...especially from the 'Photoman' ....a 3" 640 sounds nice, is that the 38 special version?

i always hoped they would come out with a K frame version. imagine that carry piece!

No, it's MY grail gun...seriously, I like that even better than the 3" 60-4. I have wanted a 1 7/8" no-dash 640 for a while, and never knew it came in a 3".

TIL NOW.

Great snag, Photoman.

Beautiful piece. I remember when they were in production and I kept telling myself that I was going to buy one next time, along with the 65 3-inch and the ..... I did buy a 3-inch 60 in 38 Spec. back then. the 3 inch guns are little more difficult to conceal in some places, but are such great shooters.

Nice gun! I snagged one this summer as well. However, mine has Pachmayrs on it, so it doesn't look as sharp as yours. Mine was also fired very little as well.

Never knew there was such a thing. Very nice! I have the short barreled version and have always enjoyed shooting it with mild hand loads.

That's a beauty! I love how your photo looks almost exactly like this:

Is your gun marked "Tested for +P+" like it says in the ad?
I've only ever seen that marking on the earliest version of
the 640, the CEN-prefix, 1-7/8" barreled version:

Unfortunatley, mine is not a CEN gun and is not so marked. Funny how that picture looks almost the same. I should retake it and move the angle just a bit. :)

Very nice revolvers gentlemen!

I like them all! But I must admit, that 9mm is super nice But I could be happy with the 38 Spl. Grips look nice also.

Very nice-I stupidly passed on one when the first came out-got a 2 inch instead. Myine was marked +P+ with CEN serial number prefix. The 3 inch sat for a while at the gun shop and I passed it up many times.
I also foolishly sold the 2 inch original 640. I bought a NYPD contract 640 with frosted finish to replace it. And now, that's gonna go on the chopping block. I need a Glock in .40 as a backup to the duty weapon.

For the life of me, I can't see how S&W can test a gun for +P+ ammo when there are no standards for that designation. There are industry standards for +P ammo, but not +P+. An ammo builder can stuff anything he wants into a round that exceeds +P standards and call it +P+ whether it exceeds the +p standard by 50 PSI or 5,000 PSI. In a really solid big frame revolver I would use +P+ ammo, but +P+ in a J frame? Again, remember there are no industry standards for +P+ so Smith is basically stating the gun is safe with ANY load? Maybe there is a reason that the guns marked +P+ are so rare.
