Where are all the Gen 1-2-3 mags?

Picked up some mags at the Akron show today. Need info on 1. The 2nd one in each pic is like the one I posted in post #77, then post #79 said it's for a 645.
The 1st one in each pic is new to me, metal follower - different baseplate. Would it be the predecessor to the 2nd one in each pic ?

The 4th edition S&W bible indicates there are two versions of the 3913TSW. 1997-1999 3913TSW calls for a 7rd magazine, 2000-2006 3913TSW calls for a 8rd magazine and slide is labeled '9 Tactical Smith & Wesson, and those were the 'railed' versions.

Not that long ago after years of looking, I finally did find and get an excellent Pre-Rail 3913TSW for the price I was willing to pay. $525.00 but it is excellent and complete with everything. Everything including two extra extended "finger" baseplates. They are exactly like my CS9 magazine baseplates. I "assumed" that they originally came with the pistol and seem to remember that they were actually original parts of the package. I copied your picture for reference.

The one on the left is the first version 645 magazine. The metal follower may not always engage the slide stop as the last round is ejected and the spring retained base plate can come off during a reload if the mag is forcefully slammed into the mag well.

The one on the right is the second version 645 magazine. The plastic follower and button retained base plates are far more reliable.

On more than one occasion (not related to S&W semiautos) I have bolstered my hard-to-obtain mag inventory by finding a gun packaged with a bunch of mags, and then re-sold the gun. Not the easiest thing to do, but it seems to me that "package deals" often tend to sell on auction sites for a price clearly below the value of all the components. I don't have a solid explanation for that and YMMV. I surmise people just don't like to have to calculate the value of the various package components and add them all up, but I don't really know.

Midway seems to get a fair amount of new factory magazines from S&W, but the models fluctuate. Sometimes you can order one on back-order, and sometimes you can't, and just have to check back.

This is the current situation for brand new 439/3906 single stack magazines. (No back-order, but overdue to come into stock, apparently.)

I haven't seen any 4506/4566/4566TSW factory mags on the Midway site for a while, but then I haven't been looking, either.

I occasionally order another spare CS9/7rd and 3913/8rd mag from them, just to put back, but prefer to wait until they have a sale on them. I think I paid $26/ea some while back when they went on sale. Still not a bad price for $35, though, for brand new factory mags made for the discontinued (but immensely popular) single stack 3rd gens.

Rather than wait for the factory to list receiving a current order of 4040PD magazines, I checked some of the online vendors of new 3rd gen magazines (who sometimes have standing orders for factory mag runs). I picked up a couple more extra 4040 mags when Brownells quickly got some in. The were a bit pricey at approx $45/ea, but I got them for a few dollars less with a LE/armorer discount. Not as low as I could've ordered them from the factory (26% armorer discount of MSRP), if I wanted to wait a few weeks (or months) but Brownells had them listed as shortly arriving in-stock.

I recently purchased a 945 performance center. I assumed the two mags that were in the box were the correct magazines. They were not. Now I have a full sized 945 that I can't shoot. Who among you magazine wizards can help me out.../ point me in the right direction.

What do the mags that came with it look like? Post a picture.

If they don't have the PC logo on them they aren't for the 045 . Most , if not all of my 945 mags say " For 945 use only " on them . I sent you a PM .

The 8 round ones will work in the 945 and the 4506. The 7 round ones will work in the 945 Compact and the 4516. I have some like the photos that I would sell.

Question for the former S&W employees: What was S&W policy on the manufacture of magazines for their semi-auto handguns? Was the assumption that each semi-auto handgun owner would like X number of magazines for their gun? What was the number X - 2 or 5 or 10 or ? It would be interesting to get some idea of the total number of S&W manufactured magazines which were produced. Or was the number of magazines manufactured a variable where one model of semi-auto handgun had a total number of Y magazines made for it while another model had a total number of Z magazines made for it? An inquiring mind would like to know.

Numrich (Gun Parts Corp) makes a repro 39 mag with the old style metal "X" follower.

I have several of them and they work fine in my 39-2. Except for not having the "S&W" logo on floor plate, they are very close copies of the original.

I only have one Mod 39 mag with the metal X follower, a well used one provided for me by oldman10mm. I can't comment on its function, although it works perfectly for me, because sometime in its past it had a Metalloy finish added so it is super slick inside... in fact it has become my go to mag in the Franken-Smith. Thanks again go to oldman10mm! :D

It was 'Armaloyed', you got one and the other I kept for my 'collection'.

Just rec. two nice Mod-39 X steel follower mags. These have the long floor plate stamped S&W. About mid 1960s to 1972. Not new/unused, but nice shape. Fit and function were spot on. Small line on the upper part of the mag body by the cut out due to the mag catch.
