Who Likes Iced Tea?

I like iced tea. When I was in New Zealand I ordered a glass of iced tea from a waitress in a diner and she looked at me like I was a Martian. She had never heard of anyone wanting iced tea. I then ordered a hot tea and a glass of ice. Sort of like Jack Nicholson in Seven Easy Pieces.

Though I make sun tea for guests, if its ICE TEA, then since I am on Long Island, what do you think it needs to be?

Of course when I lived in Louisiana and Tennessee, it was a staple, but I never liked Sweet Tea, too sweet for me, so lots of lemon, mint and some Sweet and Low and I am ready to go (Before Noon)

We had it about every day during the growing season on the farm when I was at home. Often my Dad, brother and I would take an iced tea break on a particularly hot day, or when we were between major jobs. Dad liked a good bit of sugar in his, my brother NEVER used/uses sugar, and I can take it either way.

Now I'm the only one in the house here who drinks it, and the stuff won't keep longer than around 20 hours or so, so I'm learning to make it in smaller amounts.

I lived in SC three years or so, but never had sweet tea while I was there. Maybe you southern folks can tell me how it's made(I wouldn't think it would be complicated, but you tell me.).

Regards,
Andy

Forgive the drift but I have a question for you Long Island fans.

I think it is an incredibly refreshing cocktail and I like them. They are also one of the few consumables that consistently give me heartburn. Any ideas on the ingredient that talks back to me? I don't make them at home but will occasionally order one as an aperitif.

Tried it plenty of times and only liked the iced tea my Sicilian friend steeped in the sun.

no offense to those that enjoy "Sweet Tea"... but I generally can't stand the sugar level in most prepared "brown Kool-aid"... I like tea straight, lightly sweet or with a bit of citrus, lemon or lime... but not the too sweet stuff... just hurts my teeth thinking about it... but I do like the peach stuff...

Also growing up in the Deep South.....strong, sweet tea with lemon, has been my favorite drink for most of my 67 years! memtb

My Family wasn't that hardcore on the super sweet tea but I often had it at other places.
The last time I recall having the OMG this tea is sweet was at the Savannah
Airport.

Ice tea is my go to drink in the summer and when out to dinner. I gave up soft drinks, whatever they use for sweetener in diet sodas makes me crave sweets, so tea is a good drink for me I am not a fan of sweet tea. Plan straight strong tea with lemon. I like Sun tea.

Life would not be worth living without Iced Tea. It has been my favorite beverage for as long as I can remember. When I was a kid I preferred it with a ton of sugar and some fresh lemon, but now I prefer unsweetened with lemon. At one point I was drinking over a gallon a day, but I've cut back to a half gallon or so a day.

When I brew my own I prefer Lyons tea bags from Ireland. When I was in Ireland I couldn't find iced tea, many people had no idea what it was. The folks who owned the B&B we stayed at had me show them how to make iced tea.

My preferred bottled iced tea is Lipton Pure Leaf unsweetened black tea. If I buy a sweetened tea I get Turkey Hill. I also enjoy the Philly area classic Arctic Splash if I can find it. Arctic Splash is not particularly good iced tea, but it used to sell for .25 cents a 16oz carton. Yes, waxed cardboard carton, the waxed cardboard adds some extra flavor. Last time I bought it at the Acme it was up to $1, but the nostalgia was worth it. The empty cartons were a common sight in the Fishtown section of Philly, leading to the creation of the "Fishtown Iced Tea". Take a carton of Arctic Splash, take out half the tea, replace with booze, and enjoy from the carton. Great for avoiding those annoying open container citations when socializing on the front step or street corner.
