Tattoos? Got two!!

IMHO "I want one. What to get?" is the wrong way to approach such a permanent decision. As others have said, it needs to be personal.

In my case, years ago I was given a bit of original art and it became very meaingful to me. I use it as a "signature" in many ways, and had it incorporated on a number of my possessions; vehicles, sports equipt etc.. It describes major interests and activities in my life. It is unique and recognized by my friends who often remark and compliment me for it's use.

Only after it became very personal and meaningful did it occur to me to make it a tattoo. Private, personal, and relevant are the criteria I would suggest.

I am 65 now, when I was much younger I thought about a tattoo. I was in the Air Force and thought about the Air Force logo from the 60's. When is it to old to get a tattoo?

You are never to old. It just gets harder to apply on your skin...

BUT; a GOOD artist can do this. It's crucial to find the right artist and not an scratcher...

I have my daughters' names on my forearm. That's the only ink I have.

When I was a young drunk, I had plans of getting a few. Looking back at it now, thank God I drank all my money away & couldn't afford them - I am at a point in life now that I would've regretted them.

I always thought a portrait of me would look nice.
Maybe shooting a Triple Lock or Reg Mag.
Might get some weird comments though.

Stick with a good subject. Harley is a good one to start with. That way you can add onto it or select other tats in the future that are in the same theme. I've got 12-13 on my arms only. I'd stay with black, if I could do it again. The sun fades the colors in a couple years. GET THE WORK DONE IN A CLEAN REPUTABLE PLACE. I had one done in Ohio once and I was the last customer. The guy was a well known fine line artist. He let his wife and brother in and a couple kids. They all sat down around watching as I got my work done. Me, the other adults, and the tattoo guy were drinking moonshine out of a mason jar while he worked on me. He was wiping the needle on his jeans between colors. Once he started I was in for the finish though. That was 25 years ago. Tattoo turned out great, and I didn't get Hepatitis or worse. (I don't think anyway)

I got my 1st tattoo 37 years ago. The colors are just as bright as the day it was done. Those old school tattoo guys knew what they were doing back in the day.
I had a few more done after that in a 10 year span. You can really see the difference in the ink coloration.
My last one I had done, 2 years ago, was done by an artist with 46 years of experience. That guy does very nice work!

Got a Chinese style panther on my left forearm and a dragon on my right. They are very old and I can tell you they blend and fade over time. Especially if you ride like you and I do. The sun is not kind to tats. I have a nephew who is an excellent tattooist and I'm going to have him redo them for me. I never felt the need for others. Chose something that has meaning to you. Mine do.

Look for an GOOD artist and bring your ideas there.

I would be even more restrictive and look for a GREAT artist.

I was very impressed with a young waitress's intertwined flowers on her forearms and complimented her. I asked her if it was "expensive". Without batting an eye she said "Good ink is never cheap".

Choose wisely! You will probably be living it for the rest of your life!

The depth that the ink is placed is very important as it "diffuses" if not in the right place and lines get indistinct and fuzzy.

From what I have seen there are a lot of "hacks" out there.

One of my co-workers many years ago had open heart surgery so after he heals up, he has this huge scar on his chest. We had actually convinced him to get a tattoo done to show like a flap of skin folded down from the incision with this monstrous hand reaching out and two red eyes still back within the dark chest cavity staring out. The unfolded side of the chest would have had broken stitches right where his original stitches were. One of the guys even drew it up for him and he was all for it. Only one snag. His wife said not only no but hell no. End of discussion.

Happy as a lark!

Well, here is what I've had done. The bar and shield came out nice as far as I am concerned. The horse came out better than expected. Everything is not as it seems and things are hidden. The healing process will be interesting over the next few weeks. I've been told to come in for a check-up/touch-up in three weeks. Sorry about the saranwrap. I can tell that there will be more to come. The artist has been in the business for 21 years and has a very clean studio and excellent professional hygene.
