Liberty safes in general are top notch (I have a Liberty President for 20 years) but not even close to the security of a Jewelers Safe. A Jewelers Safe would have to be converted to a gun safe by building racks and shelves, but the Burglar Rating is usually much higher.. Gun Safes are known for their high gloss paint finish, fancy gold or silver plated spoked wheels, pin striping, etc. (which you are paying a pretty penny for instead of strength) while Jewelers Safes are plain jane dull industrial finished workhorses that will out perform a "gun safe" every time.
If you can get over the safe NOT having a fancy finish, go look at some used Jewelers Safes - you will get a lot more security if that is what you truly want. Most people who buy Gun Safes usually wind up putting other valuables in there too, making the safe a much higher risk for loss. You will have to have a few basic tools and some mechanical ability to build shelves and racks, but you will wind up with one secure safe.
The MOST IMPORTANT THING is no matter what safe or brand you buy, BOLT IT DOWN!!!! If you can hide it in a closet with an alarm system on it, all the better, but bolting it down has proven to make a safe that much more secure because it's much harder for a burglar to work the door opened in the upright position than on its back.
If I were to buy another safe I would follow my own advise. 20 years ago I did what most of us have done and bought the fancy painted Gun Safe. Again, Liberty is a great Gun Safe, but the Jewelers safes are far superior because they are thicker, heavier, have better locks and are just designed from the get-go to hold more valuable items.
ADDED May 14th:
Just did a quick check on Fleebay and there are jeweler's safes that are around the same outer dimensions of a Liberty President Series 40 but the Jewelers safe has 6" thick doors, and weighs in at over 3,000 pounds. They are rated so that an Insurance Co. will insure up to 3 Million dollars! The price - - - - about the same as the Liberty in excellent used condition. Some also have another small safe inside with another combination lock - for extra valuable items.
Overkill? Maybe, but if you can get MUCH MUCH MUCH better protection and fire resistance for the same money and you can get over the Jewelers safe having less than a "Hollywood finish", than that is the way to go IMHO. That's what I would do next time!
