Pavarotti scoffed at the idea that he was the 'world's greatest tenor' but seeing this I scoff at his scoffing. I can't believe you got to see him SEVERAL times. I had only one opportunity and it probably would have been impossible to get tickets because it was a benefit concert for Dr. Sabin at the Medical University of Charleston.
I've always greatly preferred Placido Domingo, among the top tenors of Pavarotti's generation. Magnificent voice, one of the best since Bjoerling in my opinion, and the man could seriously act while making great music.
I think he's only conducting these days, and doing it very well from what little I've heard of his work.
