Most of the seven ranchers who have grazing allotments on the BLM land up here on the mountain truck their cows down to the winter pastures in the valley about 2,700' lower than here. One old ranch family still trails their herd off the mountain every year -- appeared to be about 500 head this year. The cowboys and girls ride motorcycles, four-wheelers, and horses to get the job done. Takes 'em two days to make the 25-mile trek so they camp overnight with the herd about halfway down.
