10 year stopping power study

The "conjecture" put in this study about the probable effectiveness of .410 pistols does not match the actual defensive shootings in Oklahoma using such weapons. Specifically, getting the assumed five buckshot hits with one shot is the rare exception. More likely, empty the gun and get one hit.
Also, most people who have come to our range with a Judge exhibit low marksmanship skills and don't seem to want to spend the money for extensive practice. The owner who uses it as a tractor gun and routinely shoots snakes with it learns to hit his target. YMMV.

You could also have put "study" in quotes.

It seems clear to me that the important part of stopping power is
not what caliber you shoot;
but WHO you shot.

Some folks (lefties) will stop with a hit on the pinky toe.
Other folks just keep on coming.

We love that righties have these sorts of delusions. Keep spreading them. What "lefties" don't have is a gun mouth. Well, except for me. 😉

You opened the door.

I have a good idea what "gun mouth" is but, like Muss, I would like to see your definition.

Also I would like to know who "we" is.

TIA.

All very interesting.

I like defensive ammunition but FMJ is the military standard because of its reliability (never mind the Geneva convention). I like reliability.

I carry what I can conceal. Generally, that's a compact 9mm, or 2" J frame .38 Special, and I used to carry a compact .45 ACP and might again some time. But before all of those I carried a .25 ACP Beretta because it went EVERYWHERE, it was totally concealable, and nobody ever knew, and it was prohibited almost everywhere back in the day and I knew I could get away with it. I had no time to consider stopping power. I carried a gun and that was that.

The other day I went somewhere that I knew had metal detectors. So I concealed that Beretta in my car - the first time in years that it saw the light of day.

You do what you have to do.....................

All i know is, according to my friend who was a usmc infantry platoon leader in vietnam, if you have a 1911, you dont have to wonder if it will put your adversary down.

People like to bash Ellifritz perhaps because he doesn’t prove that their favorite caliber is best. Ellifritz clearly states that the study offers no conclusions or recommendations, and clearly describes its limitations. It’s just a data set of real world shootings.

Uncontrollable laughter?

Not so sure about that. Many eons ago mounting an M1917 bayonets that had been chromed to more impressively glint in the sun changed the mood of "peaceful protesters" better than just showing up with the riot gun.

There was a visible change in the willingness of the crowd to vacate the area after the command of, "Fix bayonets."

What is a lefty? Is it someone in a dark hooded sweatshirt throwing rocks at store windows during a night protest? Is it a hard working family who vote democrat, raise their kids properly, pay their tax's, maybe the husband is a vet with a loaded gun safe.

What is a righty? Is it a QAnon believer that would rather spend money on a new AR than much needed clothes and shoes for the kids? Or is it a hard working family that votes conservative, raise their kids properly, pay their tax's, maybe the husband is a vet with a loaded gun safe?

Despising the other half of the country because of their consitution granted right to live and vote as they please is just thinking from the shallow end of the pool, regardless if painting red or blue.

The greatest hoax the Powers-that-Be have ever perpetuated on the populace of this country is that there is a "left" and "right" that can't co-exist. It helps to keep folks from noticing the "up" and "down." That is where the real divide is.
The "Ups" are all on the same team- Ds and Rs.

And you would right, as far more guns are owned by republicans and independents than lefties, who tend to be anti-gun, and more concerned about how many Instagram likes their getting.
Gun ownership is far more common among Republicans than Democrats | Pew Research Center

And the ten states with the most handgun shootings? All red states.
Gun Violence by State 2022

So the second site linked is a bit confusing to me. For example it states that "The U.S. has over 30,000 gun deaths per year. According to the FBI's 2019 Crime in the U.S. report..."

Yet the 2019 UCR states "In 2019, the estimated number of murders in the nation was 16,425."

It also states that a permit is required in Texas in order to own a firearm.

It doesn't look like they did their research.

Edited to add, they also quote a WSJ article that Texas has the highest rate of violent crime. Yet when one looks at the FBI/UCR data Texas is 17th and when it comes to murder it is 23rd.

The FBI 1986 Miami incident comes to mind. However, Law Enforcement Officers engaging desperate felons is a totally different set of circumstances than ordinary citizens in self-defense.

As was noted earlier, a good study requires a a constant data set. The next best thing is common experience. The most consistent experience, as noted in the quote here, is that the criminals tend to quit when you start poking holes in them.

CNN.com - One dead, four wounded in Texas shootout - Jan. 3, 2003

Four San Antonio police officers injured, man killed during gunfight

All of the 4 officer were shot and two stayed in the fight. The suspect took multiple hits and did not stop until he was shot in the head.

There are also a lot of video on open channels that show people shot multiple times and staying in the fight.

Hey RCL,

I found out a few years ago that the propaganda about total gun deaths includes Justifiable Homicide, Self defense, and suicide. It was the only way they could massage the numbers to fit their claims.

They also wrap into that lie accidents.

Now in this case, the linked source says "The U.S. has over 30,000 gun deaths per year. According to the FBI's 2019 Crime in the U.S. report... "

While the 2019 FBI/UCR says "The FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program defines murder and nonnegligent manslaughter as the willful (nonnegligent) killing of one human being by another. The classification of this offense is based solely on police investigation as opposed to the determination of a court, medical examiner, coroner, jury, or other judicial body. The UCR Program does not include the following situations in this offense classification: deaths caused by negligence, suicide, or accident; justifiable homicides; and attempts to murder or assaults to murder, which are classified as aggravated assaults.".

You'd think they'd cover their lie a little better than that. Or maybe I missed and the nations law enforcement agencies missed 13,575 murders?

I'll add this.

Addressing the issue of murder, suicide, and accidents are all dramatically different paths. Even different kinds of murder require different tactics. The anti 2nd crowd do society a grave dis-service by conflating the three and offering non-nonsensical solutions that ignore reality and make real solutions almost impossible.

I had a friend who was a Korean war vet. He also swore by the 1911. Apparently 45 ACP will knock a man off his feet and send him flying backwards. Couldn't convince him otherwise because he'd seen it happen...

After seeing pictures of VC and Japaniese prisoners of war that lived off of
just two bowls of rice a day to stay alive when fighting........

I can see where they might be knocked off their feet, with their light body mass,
with a MV that is twice as much with the 1911 payload.
