Third is 586 no dash 8 3/8" (I have still)
Someday, I'll maybe cut barrel to 3" and make it to round butt

Maybe I just don't see them, but there seems to be less 581/586 variations around here. I still see some older 686's walking the shows or on tables but rarely any blued variations. I don't currently have a blued model. Guess it's time to convert another long gun into a "round" one ;)
I can remember lots of them I should have bought too,,,, like the 2.5" 586's nobody wanted at the time,,

Happy Thanksgiving all! Lots of beautiful guns in this thread.

A 6" 686-3 I bought new in '91 is the one that started me down the S&W rabbit hole... I still have it today. It has been joined by a few others.

Model 686: 2 1/2" 686-3, 4" no dash, 6" -3, 8 3/8" -4.

Models 696-1 and 69. The 69 is shown as received and after some light customization.

Models 581 and 681 no dash.

Almost forgot the 586's! 4 and 6" no dash, 6" -4. I think that's all...

Keep them coming!

Often thought about different calibers in the "L" frame. My .44 itch got scratched by the 696. Then again by the 69 4". My mid-range got covered by my 646 (.40 S&W).
Does anyone know of a 10mm being built? (non-factory). Maybe a 646 with an unfluted 686 cylinder re-chambered & reamed to 10mm?. I never measured cylinder length between two but I would thing strength would be more than sufficient. Maybe a trip over to see Mr. Horvath is in order.
Really need to quit thinking about something that was never built as there are still so many I haven't accumulated yet.

I tend to favor N-frames, but I do have four L-frames and they all tend to be a little out of the ordinary...

The 586-4 Brazil is one of those guns that is chambered in .38 Special only. This was from the 1997 contract. I sometimes use it for IDPA, which is how it is set-up.

The 686-6 is likewise a .38 Special only gun. I assume that this was an export contract overrun. 3" barrel / 6-shot cylinder / .38 Spl - kind of an unusual combination

The 296 Ti is an L-frame Centennial chambered in .44 Special. Scandium frame with a 5-shot titanium cylinder makes for 18 ounces of S&W goodness.

The 646 is one of the regular production 646's. There were fewer of these made than the initial run of the PC 646's (appx 300 v. 400). This one is also set-up for IDPA - but I have retired it for that purpose.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

I bought my first L-Frame soon after they were introduced, and can recall owning another seven since. Just real practical heavy duty guns IMHO. I've owned the last for several years now. Had Vito at S&W Perf. Ctr. do some work on this one, so I'm going to try to hang on to his one;)
