For Beer Time today I wanted something simple straight from the can. From SABMiller Brewing, brewed in Ft Worth, Texas I am having a good old Miller High Life in the new Heritage Can. Fine beer at a fair price. For those that are not aware, the SAB stands for South African Breweries. SABMiller is headquartered in London. Among other breweries they own Miller and Coors.

Nice. Years ago there used to be a Miller brewery not too far from me. Back in the day they made a six pack of 6oz. Bottles called,"Miller Ponies". Just like Lay's potato chips you couldn't drink just one....six pack that is

Father's Day tomorrow, I'll be with my father. It was twelve years ago on Father's Day when things started to coincidentally happen which ended up with me having a copy of Homer Bast's Captain's Diary.

As a small child my father and I watched Victory at Sea together. He would open up to me a bit and tell me stories. I remember watching the episode depicting kamikaze attacks and he was quietly dancing in his easy chair. He did not tell me much, but he told me more than anyone else.

I became interested in naval stories at an early age, and I still like researching interesting ships. Twelve years ago, I had run across the story of an LST which had stories similar to those my father had talked about, homing pigeons and listing the ship to release LCTs (I believe) from the deck. I printed the story and took it to our Father's Day luncheon at Pappa's Seafood restaurant. I gave him the article and asked if that was his LST. He said no. I said if you give me the hull number I might be able to find things about your ship. He said we were the LST-677 then the LST (M) 677, then the Yolo, and finally APB 43. I said look right here in this story that I brought this LST sailed from Guantanamo through the Panama Canal to Hawaii in a convoy with LST - 677!

Fast forward a few weeks later and a fellow in NJ who was so amazed with his father-in-law's stories of the USS Yolo he set up a website to tell the tale. It had been online for about ten days when my search hit it. I sent an email to the webmaster saying if that ship sailed into Okinawa on April Fools Day, Easter Sunday, L-Day as part of Operation Iceberg I believe my father was an officer on that ship.

That's how we found the fellow junior officer of my father who had made contact with their Commanding Officer C. Homer Bast. I am privileged to have the father I have and to have been told the story I have been told. Putting those guys back in contact with each other after many decades is something I am very proud of doing.

That packaging concept has been borrowed by ABInbev's Groupo Modelo Coronita 7 ounces bottles. Corona is the best selling imported beer in the US. I know a couple of ladies that like those little bottles. Tastes great, less filling, fewer calories, so you can drink more of them. Try finding a cooler cup that will fit a 7 OZ longneck bottle.

June 18, 1945

The news of the day - the smoke boat personnel departed to take up quarters on shore. They were proud of their unkempt personal condition and refused to clean their quarters. The two officers in charge planned to leave the same way! Our officers stood over them to see that they obeyed our petty officers. A reason for the selection of these men was that the transports found them difficult to handle and pawned them off to us for the smoke duty.

Had steak and fries for lunch; a good meal. While at the show a message was received to get under way immediately and prepare to load from a reefer. Waves were running high and the wind was blowing hard. I saw no reason for moving this late and requested a delay, which was granted.

This is the last photograph taken of LtGen Simon B. Buckner, Jr., USA, right, just before he was killed on 18 June 1945, observing the 8th Marines in action on Okinawa for the first time since the regiment entered the lines in the drive to the south. Note the rock and coral outcropping to his left. The shell that exploded hit that outcropping, dispersing fragments into the general, killing him within a few minutes. The other two staff officers were not seriously hurt.

An interesting footnote to Marine Corps history came about on 18 June 1945 when the Tenth Army commander, General Buckner, was killed by a Japanese artillery shell in the 8th Marines line while reconnoitering the front. The next senior general officer on the scene was Marine Maj. Gen. Roy Geiger, the IIIAC commanding general. Geiger, an aviator who had commanded the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing at Guadalcanal, I Marine Amphibious Corps at Bougainville and IIIAC at Guam and Okinawa, was spot-promoted to lieutenant general to become the first and only Marine and the first and only naval aviator — perhaps the first and only aviator — ever to command an American army in the field.

So how stupid does one get on an auction for the 44 hand ejector he's been searching for, that happened to leave the factory one day after one was born? And it happens to be nearly perfect?
I'm sorry. I couldn't read past the first half dozen words in your post.
