Dick's Sporting Goods in trouble

I never saw a firearm I wanted to buy in a Dick’s but I used to buy golf and fishing equipment there. Haven’t set foot in one since the ban and don’t plan to ever again.

Almost ALL of my gun related purchased are done on-line anyway. Not even because it is so much cheaper - but MANY of the specific items I want are not in the LGS. I find that most of what they carry are the same cheap accessories that the Big Box stores carry and so when I want a specific quality item (Dewey Rifle Rods & Accessories or Rig Products for example) they must be ordered on-line as I know no LGS that actually has them in stock. Oh sure, once in a while you will find ONE single item from those manufacturers, but their extensive lines are just not carried - at least in my neck of the Woods. Yea, if I need a can of Remoil or something I know is in stock, I'll pick it up at a LGS, but if you want quality accessories, patches, brushes, etc. I buy form Brownell's, Mid South or Midway.

I find the same situation with tools, knives, boots, etc. That in itself has forced me to do on-line purchases rather than in local stores.

In the Philadelphia area...they putting in a new store that is only a mile from an existing store...which does not make much sense to me. They also have a store in King of Prussia, so that makes three Dick's store within 4-5 mile radius. My kids always want to go there to look at shoes...but I won't spend any money with them. I forecast some of these stores closing in the future.

Just bought some Remington 9mm that was on sale there for 2 boxes for $18. Replacement Grips for my golf clubs and their cheap pop up folding canopies are the only other things I buy. Patronize local or Sportsman Warehouse whenever I need most things.

Saw a Dick's ad on TV last night. They were pushing clothing and foot ware. No other items were in the ad. I guess they are trying to make a few bucks off selling apparel for Christmas.

Without guns/hunting/camping they will basically be a clothes and shoe store with stick and ball accessories.
Basically just another run of the mill store.

Watch for liquidation sales when they close.

I think it's admirable to be concerned for employees of Dicks losing their jobs. That said unemployment in the USA is very low at this time and the jobs at Dicks are low paying retail. Retailers go out of business in the US all the time and you can bet employees of Dicks have already left or are planning to. It's not a tragedy.

The truth is Dicks probably weighed the importance of firearm-related business and decided the positive impact of banning certain sales would give them new thankful customers. They're probably not stupid, just guessed wrong. Capitalism is great but it can be rough too.

I am not going to cry, nor am I going to do the happy dance that a business such as Dick's has lost a sizeable revenue...I may cry over a business that directly affects my well being. But in the case of Bass Pro Shops, or Cabelas, or Dicks, none of those really effects my well being.

Consider, do we or will we for go Sears for no longer offering sales of their guns via their catalogue sales?

As has been mentioned, just a bad political move by a few, (CEO and staff) that effects the sales and profit for the overall company.

Usually, when one weed dies, another will take it's place.

Does your IRA, 401K, or other retirement plan carry Dick's in the portfolio? I've got five bucks that says you don't know the answer to that multiple thousand dollar question. It might be more of a tragedy for you than you think. The shortsightedness of people in regard to these things is always amazing to me . . .

Your ego exceeds your judgement and knowledge. I have been retired for 11 years and manage my own money right down to the last share or bond. But thank you for your concern. If you have a special interest in Dicks you should share it with us rather than go off on people who are expressing legitimate opinions.

Personally I don't care if Dicks is in my portfolio. I'm diversified enough that even if it is, it would be such a tiny fraction of a percentage that any negative effect would be negligible. Like a pimple on a gnat's behind kind of negligible.

Speaking of having shares of stock that you don't see, a fund I was invested in, had me in thousands of shares of Enron. One day the fund went from more money than I have today to zip. I lost 10 years of retirement savings, and it took months to get to the bottom of "why?"

Muss has a point.

I’m willing to bet that we all have money tied up in companies we don’t approve of. But to move your money for political beliefs would be stupid. The same as Dicks did with their political beliefs.

Investing money is one thing. Trampling on our 2A rights is another.

Trouble with people is they have not guts and are selfish. No one should by
anything from Dicks unless it's going out of business sale. Find some place
else to buy what you need and let them die on the vine.

Can’t say I’ll shed too many tears about this. They made the bed they’re currently sleeping in, and America has spoken that it doesn’t like their bed.

"It'd be a nice thing to see them go under".

I do not agree with that sentiment. Of course I do not like their decision regarding firearms and they have been punished. We have lost too many American owned businesses with the subsequent loss of jobs. And we don't need another big building standing empty.
