Has anyone given thought to the music at their funeral?

That works too.
I only have a few requests.
I don't want people to stand there and tell everyone what a great person I was. People do that at funerals even if the deceased was a ****.
It won't be in a church. Somebody who can't sing wont be accompanied by a piano or an organ.
I did pick the music, cremation (they can do what ever they want with the ashes) and a picture of me on top of my urn from when I was about 6-7 years old.
I have four daughters. I only have a few wishes that I know they will do their best to honor.
Any or everything else is up to them.
And I hope they serve alcohol and that everyone has a good time.

I attended a co- workers funeral several years back. Joe wanted Glen Miller's music. Can't remember the song but it sure reminded all of us of Joe. He was a great guy.

for myself, however, just because I have worked with choirs in several, often frustrating capacities ... this one is mine.
I want to go knowing how hard they will crack trying to think of how to do this.

ORGAN MUSIC.
Growing up Dad played the piano & organ. Constantly revving the volume pedal on the organ was about as annoying as anything could be.
Like living in a roller rink. Silent night at Christmas & the rally diddy during sports events was all I could play, or care for. I could listen to a piano all day, no problem.

"What bothered me the most was seeing the graves of people who had been dead for DECADES and their family is still decorating the grave for holidays or coming out on Sunday to "spend time" with the dearly departed."
Well, this may be an old southern/country tradition to honor your loved ones who have gone on before. Growing up, my grandmother would put flowers on her daddy's grave, on my grandfather's grave and then later, on my great grandmother's grave.
If I lived closer, I would put flowers on all of my kinfolks graves.
My Sons of Confederate Veterans camp puts out small 3rd National Confederate flags on Confederate graves every Memorial Day.

Just as real guitar amps have tubes, real organs have pipes.
that said, I think they are popular in church settings as they may very well count as penance.
the missus and I did the Mannheim Steamroller interpretation of of Silent nite .. she on piano, I on a BC Rich Warlock through a trainwreck clone once upon a midnight mass ... man, that was lethal

Per family history (the last one was in ~1000BCE), a Viking funeral.
After consuming adequate quantities of Akvavit, they shove the dragon boat off from shore and fire flaming arrows into it while playing "Ride of the Valkyries". Then they finish the Akvavit.
Well, I AM sure they'll drink the Akvavit, at least.

All the posts requesting Bagpipers reminded me of this one:
This is such a beautiful story of a bagpiper who was late for a funeral.
As a bagpiper, I was asked by a funeral director to play at a graveside service for a homeless man who had no family or friends. The funeral was to beheld at a cemetery in the remote countryside and this man would be the first to be laid to rest there.
As I was not familiar with the backwoods area, I became lost and being a typical man, did not stop for directions. I finally arrived an hour late. I saw the backhoe and the crew who were eating lunch but the hearse was nowhere in sight.
I apologized to the workers for my tardiness and stepped to the side of the open grave where I saw the vault lid already in place.
I assured the workers I would not hold them up for long but this was the proper thing to do. The workers gathered around, still eating their lunch. I played out my heart and soul.
As I played the workers began to weep. I played and I played like I'd never played before, from Going Home and The Lord is My Shepherd to Flowers of the Forest. I closed the lengthy session with Amazing Grace and walked to my car.
As I was opening the door and taking off my coat, I overheard one of the workers saying to another, Sweet Jeezuz, Mary 'n Joseph, I have never seen nothin' like that before and I've been putting in septic tanks for twenty years.

I endure mindless music in stores, malls, restaurants, and from morons driving autos with 30 kiloton sound systems. It is discouraging to think that even death will offer no respite.
