IDEA: Distributor-Like Revolver Group Buy???

This keeps sounding better and better....lots of good suggestions and opinions, but people seem still encouraged.

For my 2 cents; .357/.38 special, 3 or 4", K frame, adjustable sights.

keep up the good work.

I think, these are the questions the leaders of the project should ask the distributor, once one has been selected. Lots of speculation about what S&W will do or not do could be answered rather quickly by these folks.

To answer the question asked about removing a few lines of code in a CNC program in order to leave out the lock: this is very feasible from a technical standpoint and shouldn't take more than a few minutes to accomplish by whomever normally programs toolpaths at S&W. This is one of the few custom details mentioned so far that would be cheap to accomplish if allowed.

Thanks for that info. (I've just started working with CAD software in a 3D modeling class - back in school after 39 years out - but have no idea how CAD stuff actually translates to the machines it ultimately drives.)

So the mandatory-lock policy is almost entirely driven by philosophy, not economics. This reinforces my view stated earlier - the current S&W is best viewed as primarily a lock company selling guns.

Can we keep the thread on topic and not turn it into a "Why the lock?" debate? That question has been beaten to death and still gets post-mortem colonoscopies on a regular basis.

As someone else remarked, S&W is not going to drop it for a run of 500 guns, no matter why it's still there.

Wish lists and complaining about the lock is putting the cart miles ahead of the horse. First it has to be determined if S&W would even consider it.

good luck gentlemen. if you decide on something I like, I will buy. if not, there are lots of other guns for me to spend my money on. this is exactly how it started on the colt forum.

Very interesting idea. I really like the idea of a limited edition gun linked to this great forum. But let's think basic (KISS) at first.
Maybe contact Talo and Lipsey's again and ask their thoughts on what might be the best selling/available model/caliber. They are in the business of selling new S&Ws and should know what the current market trends or availability is.
If they are to be involved they will want to be sure this is profitable for them. Either company should be able to give input to make this work for their company and the forum.
I would think a pretty basic model in .38/.357 would be a good starting point in this adventure. If this proves popular and profitable for a distributor other models could become a possibility. This would be the way to meet the different likes of the membership.
No IL, with a special serial number available for the forum members and a different type serial number that the distributor might use if this S&W forum model proved popular.
Special serial numbers, specially marked case, grips or barrels are all going to raise the price. But would be cool options. JA

I haven't read all the posts, but a re-run of the S&W 45 should appeal to most all of us here, though I personally would like a 3" HB, RB, 10 shot .22 LR version.

Raise the price enough to include a holster mated to the gun, and put one or more of our custom leather makers to work.

Special S&W Revolver

Hi Guys,
I have been a member for some time but this is my first posting:
I like the idea and would be happy to sign up to it, not too concerned as to model but would prefer 3".
Now the hard part; I live in Switzerland thus it would need to be sent to my local dealer. I could organise paperwork this end, could S&W ship direct?

I think that might have to be a challenge to be addressed after many other hurdles. Welcome aboard though!

I am intrigued enough to want you to know. I've watched thread for a few days now. There are certain revolver options that attract me most, but I'll wait for a survey / poll to offer those details if that is ok.

Just an idea for the first poll.
I think the first poll should be "HOW MUCH ARE YOU WILLING TO SPEND FOR THIS GUN?"

Some might be thinking $500,,, and others might be thinking $2500 !!

Because if you can not get people to commit to a price range,,, then it kills the whole deal,,no matter what gun is decided on ,,

I also think the polls should be set up as to what frame size you would be willing to put money down for, and not just limit the choice to just one frame size per vote.
Because while I prefer a -N- frame,, I also would be willing to go along with a -L- frame if it was set up with what I wanted.
So on the poll I could put down that I was interested in both the N and the L frame.

Then caliber.

After frame size and caliber,we could poll for barrel length and sights.

Then grips .

Followed by material gun should be made of(blued steel,,stainless ect, )
And last "lock or no lock"

This way you can get some idea of how many gun buyers you have,, and see them drop off as the gun is designed through the polls( or maybe some will change their mind and go with what comes from the polls, even though it wasn't the gun they originally hoped for!)

I'm pretty new the the forum and don't want to be negative. But after reading many of the posts on these forums I really doubt if you can get even 50 people here to agree on anything. Much less when it will have to be about a certain frame, caliber, etc. I am interested though, but holding little hope we would get enough people together. Especially when it comes to spending a large amount of money on a gun. I'll be following this from the sidelines waiting to see where it goes.

S&W did make some no-lock M24's in 2011 for their Heritage Series. That was a small run.

I like the idea of a 3-inch L-frame, but I already have a M686.

How about a 3-inch no-lug 10-shot M617. As far as I know that's never been made.

Or a 4-inch full-lug M60 with adjustable sights. Similar to their popular 3-inch version, but with a 4-inch barrel to make it something different.

If it's gonna have the lock I'd prefer a stainless gun, because then I could more easily "disappear" the lock mechanism. Maybe we could offer them with "The Plug" as part of the package.

A 3" 617 ten shot. In my dreams! I would love that.

FWIW
John Ross on his website says he placed and received an order for #500
custom 500 magnums. Made to his specifications. They do have a IL on them. If I recall he states the minimum order was 500. And it was through the Performance Center...
