My beloved 66-2 has a problem. Last night I did some dry-fire w/ the using snap caps, etc. All went fine as normal. Then things stopped being normal. Cocked the revolver in SA. Pulled the trigger and hammer came down only 1/2 way.

This afternoon I removed the side plate to see exactly what the problem with my revolver was. Found that the pin which holds the spring in the slide has broken. This is a first for me. Cannot tell if it is welded to the frame or screwed into the frame. Broke off clean with the frame. No stub to try to grab and unscrew, etc.

Need to know, how does one go about fixing this issue? Is this something that I should return to S&W for repair? Is this even fixable?

Will appreciate any information that members of our board might want to offer. Sincerely. bruce.

Wow! It has been a long time since I saw that particular problem (I quit being a LE Armorer 3 decades ago.). If I remember correctly, that pin is pressed in place. If it were me repairing it, I will drill a blind hole in the same spot and then press/drive a very slightly over size pine in place. Use one longer than the final length so you can trim and dress the end.

Years ago, I could have done this all freehand. Now, a good drill press or milling machine would be a big asset. (I have neither, so it would be done freehand).

Re: S&W repair it. Yeah. Getting the little bit of post out is beyond me. Thought about taking a mild steel rod and tacking it to the broken part and seeing if I could extract it. Problem is, if I messed up just a little bit, there was no going back. Also I thought about how to get it to stay put ... braze, epoxy, maybe put some sort of wedging/brace to support it. At that point, I decided it was time to quit thinking and just sent it to S&W. Once upon a dreary Saturday my brother looked at my efforts to shade tree mechanic a water pump on my beloved 74 Nova. He looked up and said, "Bruce, if you and your Craftsman tools will stay out from under this hood, your car will last a lot longer!" Guess I need to keep that in mind when it comes to shade tree gun smithing! Sincerely. bruce.

"brucev", I'm waiting patiently & eagerly anticipating your "Rest Of Story" after sending it to S&W for repairs. You will share the results with us, will you not?

Send to S&W for repair

The hammer pin can break as well.
Best to let the factory make those repairs, if you don't have the proper tools and knowledge.
Lotsa info on the Web about how those repairs are properly accomplished.

Drill thru the side, and press in a new pin, was one. A jig for the hammer pin, as it needs precision.
I'm expecting the slide spring pin to fail, at some point, in the 63-3 rescue project.

Funny you should mention the hammer pin. Just now noticed the tip of the hammer nose is broken off! Guess I'll have to ask S&W to repair both the broken pin and the hammer nose. Guess when it rains it pours!!! Sincerely. bruce.
