Managing Reloading Inventory

The main thing that has held me back from inventorying my loading components is getting started.
Running around counting stuff I would use pencil and paper, later transferring numbers to a spreadsheet to better organize things.
But I just can't get started.

My inventory system is simple. I call it "Hoarding".

If there's room for more and money to buy it, hoard it.

Nope, I don't buy your analysis.

When NY made a law that required a NICS check to buy ammo, I went out the day before and bought what I believe to be a lifetime supply of .22 rimfire. Hoarding? Nope! I call it being prepared.

So far, components can still be shipped and bought over the counter. If they add that to the ridiculous law I may have to get a home improvement loan.

I hear you. I was caught short during the recent kerfuffle. I paid dearly for primers. Never, ever again.

I'm replenishing everything as I use it.

I just went through an update of guns ammo and loading supplies. I am trying to get my primers, powder, brass and bullets in sync. I still have to nail down what loads I am going to stick with. I don't want to load up thousands of rounds then realize they aren't what I want. At least I know what I have now and where I need to fill in gaps or not to buy any more.

I applaud your discipline.

I keep a spreadsheet to maintain my component and ammo inventory. I am not always diligent at keeping it up to date. As for cost of reloading components, I do not track that. I consider it sunk costs. I reload several calibers that are $45 to $50 a box for new ammo and I know I am around 20 or 30 cents per round to load those. I try not to load too many 9 mm with 10 cent primers, but otherwise, I reload what empties I have when the mood strikes me.

Since my health took an upswing....

...just in the last few months I got my reloading stuff on shelves and in plastic containers. Then I got Covid that slowed me down. I have a lot more to do, but I'm enjoying getting things straight. I used to keep a good log of reloads but I tapered off after I did less experimenting and more standard loads. But I've been experimenting more again with my new-found energy and need to update my log book.

I agree about using the 10 cent primers in 9mm (that I shoot a LOT of) but I'm done some more experiments with heavy for caliber bullets and light for caliber bullets.

Here's the definition of hoarding:

If you get caught unprepared, those who had the foresight to stock up are "hoarders".

Having foresight and stocking up are not hoarding.

Back around 2008, I said something to my wife about the ammo shortage. She asked me if I was stocking up. Well, I received that not only as permission, but as an instruction, and I went to town with it. I still buy loaded ammo and components when I see a good deal, but I don't really need to. I have enough of everything to last the rest of my life.

I recently inventoried everything I have in stock, and it was not an easy task, but now I know, without guessing, exactly what I've got.

Spreadsheets….lots and lots of spreadsheets…….
Keep inventory of powders, primers, bullets, brass, loading dies and equipment- all the puts and takes. Easy to determine what I got and what I need, when I need them. Kinda fun really, for this nerd……

I think most reloaders are, at least, a little OCD. A little inventory is not quite enough and after a while it turns into: "What in the Hell was I thinking!"

I am in my mid 70s and if I live to be 140, I will not run out of components. Well, maybe except for primers. I guy can always use more primers!
