Spent the morning at the Dentist getting some work done and had some time after the torture session to fool around. I drug out my recently adopted four-inch Model 57 and took a few shots. I had a chance to clean it up and wax it. It turned out pretty good for a working gun. Not a safe queen but not abused either. It has the smoothest trigger I have ever felt on a Smith & Wesson. It even beats my four-screw Model 27. Anyhow here are some pics.

Sweet! That's how I like to buy 'em. Nice enough to show , but with just enough character that ya don't worry about actually takin' her out now and then and don't cry if it gets another beauty mark.

And a 4in 57 is the last one I need to complete my .41 magnum 'blues' collection.

Seriously nice looking work gun there. I love the model 57, and in 4" it seems perfect.

Thanks for posting the photos.

Nice 57. Tell me what kind of speed loader is that in the 4 the picture?

sarge1967,

The speed loader is an early Safariland. The .41 Magnum has been a favorite of mine for over thirty years. It's the first cartridge I ever handloaded, thirty plus years ago. This one's a favorite because in all the years I've been associated with the .41 Magnum, I've never owned a four inch. My first was an eight and three eights Nickle, Model 57 and several six inch blued and Nickle 57's have come and gone, but this one's my first four inch. Next on the list is a four inch Nickle:) The search is on.

That's saying something, since triggers on Smith & Wessons are probably the finest production gun triggers ever made. haven't pulled a Python in awhile, but it couldn't be much better.

guys I need some help I have a 41 magnum 4 inch barrel with serial number AUC 0XXX when would this have been made...I thought all of then were n or s starting in the serial number?

I got into the .41 mag about 4 yrs ago, buying a nice 4" 57 from one of the Mods. It shot like a dream, and before I knew it, my collection had grown to 3 4" Mod 57's, one ANI pristine wood display case, a 6" NIB, and both a blued and a nickel 4" Mod 58's. I sold the first Mod 57 to a local forum member in OR, and still have all the others, which I shoot often. Great guns in a great caliber! Just missed a long-barreled 57 about 4 days ago on the Forum. Oh well; need to spend more time on the forum to find another and be a little quicker on the draw.

I just stated taking the advice of some senior members by looking in pawn shops for older Smiths. I saw a M57 but after closer inspection I saw the side plate had been improperly removed by the ragged edges. I might buy a almost worn out older Smith but never one where a amateur removed the side plate. That was the only reason I passed on it. Keith

Fredo: I put Millet Night sights on my 4" 57, and 629 and got rid of that red plastic that seems to disappear or shine right about the time the deer come in and I would lose the top of my front sight. Enjoy, Be Safe,

Starting in 1980 , S&W started a 3-letter/4-digit system (AAA0000). AUC puts it around 1986-87.
