My New Critter - 627 Snubby

I owned one of the originals and like a moron, sold it to drum up a little extra cash. For my wife's wedding ring, of all things.

Well, seven years later - and still happily married - I decided to pick up another UDR and found a NIB one in PA selling for less than the original. THAT was a sign from God ...

I just ordered a set of the PC grips that exfebee so kindly put us onto. It really is a shame that the gun doesn't come stock with these, as they really make for the perfect match. Apparently, the grips are intended for PC production guns and S&W actually moves stock out of their production gun queue for individual customer orders. It'll be interesting to see how long they take to get to me ...

My UDR was delivered with a set of full-size Jerry Miculek stocks, which I'm also partial to.

I'll post pics before and after, when the new grips arrive.

Welcome "back" to the club! Glad you were able to get another one.

Please do post some pictures when you can!

Well, I hope the Wadesboro, NC people reopen tomorrow after the inclement weather and still have another with the fluted cylinder in stock. If the do, it will be mine!!!!!!!!!

Wish me luck!

firewire...your gun looks to have the same profile Millet front sight as my pre-lock one has (pic below.) Seems like all the IL ones I've seen pics of have the different front sight like "exfebee's" has.

I've been carrying mine cross draw the last few days...love it!

My recently manufactured one (test-fired 11/24/2010) also came through with the earlier-style front sight. Apparently, S&W uses whichever type sight is handiest on a given day.

Like most, I wasn't happy with the factory-supplied, too short/too thin Eagle Secret Service grips. I replaced mine with a set of Kim Ahrends Retro Combats in cordia wood. They made a huge improvement for me.

Yep, the factory Eagles are lacking. They make a nice picture but that's about it. The Craig Spegel grips look & feel better on mine, but my preference for carrying/shooting are a set of longer Pachmayr Compaq's made for a K-frame.

The longer Ahrends like you have look great...might have to try some.

I know that the Performance Center is selling these with fluted and unfluted cylinders.

Has anyone sent their UDR back to S&W to have it fitted with both? Or purchased the other cylinder and had it 'smithed locally?

I used to be partial to the unfluted cylinder ... now I'm kinda hankering for the fluted one. Go figure ...

Pj,

I just had the unfluted cylinder replaced on a Blood Work 627-PC original i found a couple months ago with a fluted one. The fluted cylinder is S&W Product Code: 381940000, and has a cost of $ 150.66. For S&W to do the job right they charge $60.00 labor & $14.00 Fedex 2nd day back to you. They will also test fire a full cylinder if you ask & return the unfluted one. Took little under a month to get it back.

Carl,

Hmmm ... not bad for a cylinder replacement.

I wonder, in this age of CNC and micro tolerances, what the chances of simply ordering a fluted cylinder and sliding it in place of the unfluted one would be?

By the way, love your Bloodwork and your photographs. Both strongly influenced my decision to become a S&W owner again ...

Hey Carl!!! Where's the pics of your gun sporting the new cylinder??

Ok Guys, here's a couple pics of the 627-PC Blood Work "original", serial number HMA00xx, with the new fluted, 8 shot, moon clipped cylinder put in by S&W, & new S&W Grips. Like others, the Boot Grips are too short for me also. Besides guns, as you can tell i love photography & what all you can do with the pics..

Beautiful revolver and superb photography!

Two thumbs up, Carl!

Technical Question: Does anyone know or can someone measure for me the rear sight blade height on the factory adjustable rear sight that comes on these revolvers? The three sight heights are .126, .146, and .160. It looks like .160, but I don't have a caliper to know for sure. Thanks!

Man, that looks great!! They did a nice job of matching the finish. Well worth the investment.

Beautiful gun! I just ordered one and it will be my first larger frame revolver. Pretty excited and dreading the waiting game! You did good on the grips, they look nice.

John you PM'ed regarding the Grips. They are S&W Product Code number: 414170000, & Just identified on the Invoice as: " N RD Walnut For Perf. Center "
Heres a little better close up view showing the Burned-In S&W Emblem. They ran $49.00 plus shipping.

Does anyone know if these grips are still available?
They are not showing on the smith and wesson website

I put them on both of my PC627's:

One is shown in a Lobo Leather holster - great buy - get a good belt!

The grip is still SKU #414170000 ~$50 + s/h (+ s/t) and it is described as 'N-frame PC grip'. Order from S&W Accessories (parts) at the 1-800-331-0852. It is not on the S&W web 'store' listing. It isn't always 'in stock', so you may have to wait a few weeks - worth the wait.

My favorite revolver. Of course, I am fickle... but, I wanted one when they were first listed/advertised - at $1,199. When re-released, they had the the grey plastic - US-made - PC case in place of the aluminum/plastic Chineese-made PC case, the same sometimes ill-fitted Eagle grips, the IL, and... a lower MSRP - $1,185 when first re-released - $1,049 now!

Great pictures!!! Any chance you could take a picture of the 627 Snub next to a J frame? I am really curious as to the size difference. I haven't seen the snub locally. (I know this thread is 6 months old too. :) )

This is next to a K frame 64
it is wearing K frame grips in this photo.
