I would like to replace the RSA spring in my gen1 9mm shield.

I also would like to buy an extra RSA for my 3.6" 2.0 M&P 9C

Wondering two things.

Fist is it worth the extra money (about double) to buy the stainless guiderod versus the factory polymer rod?

Second where is the best and cheapest place to buy these.

Third would you recommend any other replacement parts to keep on hand that are not too costly but wear out, or parts that get lost more easily etc.

I don't want to keep every part. But just a few items to keep them running if a wear item has reached it's expected life.

Thank you.

If you call S&W with your serial # & tell them your RSA is coming apart they will send you a NEW ONE FREE
Doubt they will be open till after the New Year BUT you never know without calling

After-market Recoil Spring Assemblies with steel guide rods have a reputation for damaging the frames of pistols they have been installed in, so, no, they are not worth the extra money compared to the OE polymer RSA used by S&W. They are actually a detriment! Do a forum search and you will find several reports of damaged frames, or follow this link for similar information: s%26w frames damaged by steel recoil spring guide - Google Search

Free is good! I am not in a hurry and can wait until after the new year.

I would buy the 9C RSA from Smith&W as well then so they can ship in the same package.

The factory RSA is not polymer. Free from S&W is always best. You can also purchase one (up to 5) here:

Smith & Wesson M&P Shield 9 / 40 Recoil Spring Assembly: MGW

"This durable, steel constructed, recoil spring assembly is a factory original part from Smith & Wesson."

Last phone call to SAW got me a few FREE goodies & they are always super nice when you tell them " I have six M&Ps" :D

The KelTec P-11 and P-40 came with polymer guide rods, and a steel one was available aftermarket. The steel ones eventually wallowed out the slide hole to oval.
