The 1 that you could take anywhere(REVISITED)

So... I have been pondering this for sometime.... and the purpose of this question is slowly becoming a reality, mods please remove if not allowed as i asked kinda the same question in another sub ...

If there was 1 handgun of course modern you could take anywhere, and by that I mean (I'm from Fla) NY, CA, NJ, heck any where CONUS..... what would it be? I will soon be traveling for work i would guess within the next few month

I know there are lists of certain guns in certain states that are allowed or not I am just flat un fimilar....WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IS... WHAT SINGULAIR HANDGUN CAN I TAKE ON A AIRPLANE, BOARD THE PLAIN EXIT THE AIRPLANE WITH OUT TROUBLES

OPTIONS I HAVE Beretta centurion tactical, G19,G43x,converted 4013 to 1013, 686 plus 3in...

OR PLEASE SUGGEST AN OPTION

The reason I ask is I always stay armed especially in todays climate and I may be traveling for some work across the country so I would like to prepare in someway or just get a general idea...

I know mag capacity is an issue as well as certain types of ammo, but something is better than nothing so if i can have a 10 rd mag with FMJs so be it..

I am not active LEO(Ret. corrections)nor do I have a LEO permit

There really isn't one. For one thing, you won't be able to board a plane with any type of gun. It has to be checked in before departure and secured in your checked luggage. Once at your destination, you will be under whatever jurisdiction you have arrived in. Some states and localities will have laws about mag capacity and such, and almost all will have restrictions on concealed carry. My best advice would be to thoroughly check out the laws of your destination before you even think about taking a gun along

Don't know that such a gun exists..... NJ, Calf and NY all have major issues.

Even ammo presents issues......NJ "no hollow points"

I have carried this Colt all over the nation without any issues (lawful carry only).

I would not hesitate to carry any single stack semi-auto, or any revolver.

If I were limited to only one revolver for carry everywhere, I'd take the one that I carry everywhere.

A 3" Model 60 in 357 Magnum. Tramping in the mountains and woods to the grocery store, I feel pretty comfortable with it; although once when within 50 feet of a grizzly in Montana I thought that I'd rather have my Model 58.

Legal issues aside ........ I'd go all James Bond with my S&W 3913NL and Milt Sparks Summer Special and double IWB mag holder/ Safariland 123 horizontal mag pouch.... and a handful of magazines.

You list three of the most unfriendly Gun States. It also depends on where in the State(s) you go. I believe NYC is a NO for anything?


Even if you find a gun, Air Travel can be iffy if say you get delayed and have to stay over night. You best no claim your baggage if you stay in some place with strict no gun laws.

Sometimes, just sometimes you may just need to forget the gun. Millions of people travel without a gun and somehow survive. There are two States up North that we go where my CCW is not honored, I have survived many times.

When you say you don't have a LEO permit, I'm assuming you're referring to LEOSA. If that's the case, NY and NJ are definitely out, as well as DC. There may be others, but I'm not aware of them.

For everywhere else, the 686 is probably going to give you the least potential for problems. As I mentioned in your other thread, revolvers are probably going to be the most acceptable type of firearm. Even if semi-autos aren't necessarily banned, some places, and the people who run them, may perceive them as "evil."

Personally, I'd use my 642-1, as it's easily concealed in a variety of methods (IWB, OWB, AIWB, pocket, ankle, shoulder, etc.) if going somewhere concealed carry is allowed. Use 148gr WC in HP-restricted jurisdictions. And if it gets "lost" during baggage handling, it's not something I'm going to cry over and can replace fairly easily.

Of course, the problem is if something happens and your flight ends up getting diverted to one of the no-go locales. I had an acquaintance who was flying with a gun (legally, unloaded and locked in checked baggage) when his plane had to be diverted to NYC, a location that was not on his itinerary. When he tried to change planes, he was arrested and now has a misdemeanor conviction on his record. NY and NJ have a reputation for ignoring federal firearm transportation laws. Even if you were to somehow win in court, that's going to cost you a lot of time and money.

If I were planning a flight somewhere, and there was a possibility that my flight could get diverted to NY or NJ, I wouldn't even bother bringing a gun.

CA isn't too bad when it comes to flying with guns. Definitely not as bad as NY or NJ. As long as you're not transporting anything on the banned list, you should be ok.

Don't laugh but I would take my Taurus 605, 357, 5 shot snub nose. Effective, concealable, not as threatening to "the man" as a black gun - especially if you're an out-of-towner and you draw the attention of the local authorities. It's my travel gun.

The solution to that dilemma is pack your gun in a second bag. If you are delayed and forced to stay in a City with no possession gun laws , do not accept the bag, tell them to send it on to your destination, claim your other bag with your clothing and such. Only pack a cheap reliable gun in case you never see it again.

Interesting solution. I hadn't thought of that. If I remember my acquaintance's story correctly, he picked up his baggage while going between terminals, and got in trouble when he went to declare the unloaded gun at the next terminal, so he was in possession of his gun in the airport.
