What is “the south”

Am not knowledgeable to define where the south begins. Am knowledgeable enough to say it ain't NW Wi.

West Virginia is Appalachian, not Southern. East Tennessee is more Appalachian than Southern, whereas west Tennessee is Southern.

I think of Kentucky is rural, but not Southern.

I have lots of relatives in Arkansas. I would say central, east, and delta regions of Arkansas are Southern. Northwest Arkansas is Southern in location only, culturally it's heavily influenced by the influx of northerners and Left coasters.

Here is Mississippi, we are deep south.

Being originally from Southern Ohio, I'd consider it as being pretty much part of the South. It starts about 50 miles south of Columbus. Ditto for most of Kentucky and West Virginia.

If you use a beverage to define a local; Southeast Ohio, where both the sun and the moon shine!

My G. G. Granddad John crossed into Ohio in 1816 from Pa. First thing he did was clear a field and plant corn. The second was build a still! He was a popular man in the area around Cambridge. His oldest son was a Minister in Sandyville, his youngest (born 1832) served two enlistments in the war. After the war, he sent to Hessen for a bride, had 12 kids and lived until 1912. (I'm descended from the youngest of the 12). We are from South of the Mason/Dixon Line but never thought of ourselves as Southerners.

My mom's people hale from NOLA. When I gather with them I always come away thinking "Those people just ain't right!" It isn't about the dirt you stand on, It is about the way your heart and mind function!

The Mason Dixon line, while popular in the urban zeitgeist, is a very short line that really only covers south of the Pennsylvania state line, including Maryland and West Virginia. Nobody I know of thinks of Maryland as the South . . .

Thems fightin words to many a person what lives/lived on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. and the state of Delaware. Only reason the State of Md didn't secede from the Union was because the Yankees locked up most of the state legislature so they couldn't make a vote to secede...If they had they would have had the US Capital in the south...there were riots in Baltimore with yankee troops killing a bunch of civilians So being a southerner is partly mindset....BTW...West Virginia was originally part of the south till 1863. My wifes Great grandfather was more than annoyed when they made him a Yankee by 2 1/2 miles He stole horses from the yankees and sold 'em to Lee's army..True story

The South is as follows: Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Northern Florida; North and South Carolina get honorable mention.

I live in Southern Indiana, close to the Ohio. We’re South-ish.

I'm thinking you left out Arkansas...
...where I moved to at the tender age of 11 in the mid 60's from Long Beach, CA. Talk about culture shock. Definitely 2 different worlds back then. I learned to say, "Yes, ma'am" to the teacher who had such an accent I couldn't pass the spelling tests because I didn't understand what she was saying. Lived very rurally and rode a bus to school, which took an hour's time to get to school (meant getting up much earlier...ugh!).
Had neighbors who would hunt for squirrel as the brains were good for breakfast, and could predict a coming storm with great accuracy.
To answer your question, not sure where the geographical line is, but the South is a different mindset in a lot of ways, much friendlier, much more rural and although I couldn't wait to get away from it, the 30+ years I lived there, I will readily identify with the South somewhat, and the rest of you all is "Yankees." :)

I live in Pittsburgh, PA. Any county above, to the left, right or below is "The South." I wasn't born in this town, & I don't plan on dying here. Moving ASAP. We've been turned down on every application to move to another state about 38 times; someone will take us!

I spent some time in Pennsylvania a few years ago and loved it. What I basically found was Pittsburg on the left, Philadelphia on the right, and Alabama between those two cities....and Yeungling beer everywhere.

The states in dark red comprise what is commonly referred to as the Deep South sub region, while the Deep South overlaps into portions of those in lighter red.

Florida north of Sanford is southern. I can drive less than 10 miles west and find a lot of true southerners.

If you ask for a cold drink and they call it pop you ain't in the south yet. All cold drinks in the south are cokes except for sweet tea and anything alcoholic. Pockets in NW Arkansas say pop. I always figured they were want to be southerners. LOL
My advice head magnetic south until you find cokes and fire ants and you will be here.

I guess you have to set parameters as to the definition of south. Are you simplifying it by geography, or are you tying culture to it. Also, although it gets confused a lot, there is a distinct difference between Appalachian, or "hillbilly" culture and southern culture.
As to is southern West Virginia the "South", who cares?? I would much rather live there than Atlanta, Charlotte, Charleston SC, the entire northern part of Florida. And before anyone starts to squawk that those areas aren't the " South ", see my opening line.

I recommend you travel around and find a locale that suits you.
I wouldn’t pay any attention to how it’s defined or described.

Pilgrim, my wife and I have traveled and investigated several areas. My parents both grew up on farms in Greenbrier Co WVa. Ive spent lots of time there including summers as a kid. When I took my wife there she fell in love with it. The people, the culture, the scenery, everything. It’s where we intend to build a home and spend 7 months a yr. The other 5 will be at our place in Naples Fl. I’ll refer to the two as my hunting property and my fishing property lol…… as some have stated I guess it really doesn’t matter. But when I was asked by someone completely unfamiliar with the state it made me think. Maybe the definition lies in one’s ability to make sweet tea. My 87 yr old mother still makes a great pitcher of real brewed tea.
