What is “the south”

I believe it starts when you have travelled far enough in a southern direction that you can no longer find a good pizza, Italian cold cuts or great Italian food.

Pete, we were in Greenville SC about a year+ ago. Looking for lunch one day we stumbled upon a little place on a side street.
Italian in the interior of SC?
It is called Belladinas on W. Washington St. When we walked in we knew we were in the right place, the staff looked straight out of The Godfather.
The owner told me they escaped from NYC. They treated us real well, the food was genuine. No chain garbage.
Who woulda thunk it?

I moved to VA 31 years ago when it was still considered being the South, both in the local southern drawl and in the traditional lifestyle. These characteristics no longer exist, especially in northern VA and the Navy's influence along the southeastern coast. So the Commonwealth which was called the Capitol of the Confederacy is unrecognizable today and the locals are a vanishing breed but you can't erase or change history for political purposes so the Stars and Bars still fly on the private property of those proud residents whose ancestors fought for what they believed in.

Here's how I learned it as a kid.

First gallant South Carolina nobly made the stand,
Then came Alabama and took her by the hand;
Next, quickly, Mississippi, Georgia, and Florida,
All raised on high the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a single star.

Ye men of valor gather round the banner of the right
Texas and fair Louisiana join us in the fight
Davis, for a President, and Stephens statesmen rare
Now rally round the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a single star.

Now here's to brave Virginia, the Old Dominion State,
With the young Confederacy at last has sealed her fate,
And spurred by her example, now other states prepare
To hoist on high the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a single star.

(Alternately:
Now here's to Virginia, the Old Dominion State,
Who with the young Confederacy at length has linked her fate.
Impelled by her example, let other states prepare
To hoist high the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a single star.)

Then cheer, boys, cheer, raise a joyous shout
For North Carolina and Arkansas now have both gone out,
And let another rousing cheer for Tennessee be given,
For the single star of the Bonnie Blue Flag has grown to be eleven.

That's how we learned the order of secession. Rather that's the exact order I'm not sure anymore. Fourth grade was a long time ago.

My wife, a "yankee girl" from the Milwaukee/Chicago area, lived in Louisiana for a couple of years. She said the locals down there always bragged about being south of the Mason/Dixon line. When asked where the Mason/Dixon line was, she was told, they didn't know, they just knew they were south of it. She was actually pretty shocked to find out where it is. She was also shocked to find out "Bubba" is not necessarly an insult.

But where is the south? Anywhere south of 90 deg North, I suppose. When I went up nawth to meet her people, I saw "the south" all through Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, and southern Illinois. I was as surprised as she was when she got to Louisiana. I had no idea the south went so far north. :D

Maybe proprietors are in the witness protection program.

If you ask for a cold drink and they call it pop you ain't in the south yet. All cold drinks in the south are cokes except for sweet tea and anything alcoholic. Pockets in NW Arkansas say pop. I always figured they were want to be southerners. LOL
My advice head magnetic south until you find cokes and fire ants and you will be here.

And moo pies-don’t forget moo pies😊

I consider Texas the western-most Southern State. It fought for the Confederacy, which could be one definition. West of Texas is the Western United States. I stick with the classic definition of States of the Confederacy. Though I have to concede that many areas of Northern Virginia are lost through assimilation.

West Virginia was once known as the most Southern of the Northern states, the most Northern of the Southern states, the most Western of the Eastern states, and the most Eastern of the Western states.
