I told the story a few times, but my first S&W is a model 18-2. Still have it. At the time I didn't have a lot of money and decided to go to a gun show with a good friend. This 'old timer' was walking around with a blue box...asked to take a look.
It was an unfired Model 18 without a turn line and extra holsters, speed loaders, all sorts of stuff with it. He wanted the princely sum of $500 for it and I about fell over thinking of how much money that was to me at the time. My buddy goes, hey, that is a really good price and it is an excellent choice to start with so you can practice. At this point, I am about as white as a ghost, sweating, thinking about this deal, feeling sick, not sure what to do because it is 'so much money for a .22'.
I thought I was plumb crazy and paid the guy. As soon as I did, I had buyers remorse, saying to my friend something to the effect of, "I can't believe I paid that much for a .22; now I'm gonna be living on hot dogs and mac n cheese for a few weeks.
Well...we put it back in the box and secured it in the trunk of his vehicle, locked it and went back in, because he was still looking for something to spend his hard earned dollars on. I started talking to some of the guys who had the tables at the show and all of them said: Wow, you stole that thing with all those extras! From that point on, I realized my best friend was right, I made a good decision, and I was proud as a peacock. It was a great learning opportunity and allowed for practice at the range (back in the days when .22 ammo was cheap and plentiful). It is more or less 'retired' now and from time to time I clean and oil once a year and still laugh that at the time, it cost me about as much as I had paid for my cheap college car.
