Having lived in North St. Louis County in the 60's I can't even imagine problems in Ferguson Mo.....That North end of St. Louis County was as tightly policed as any suburban area maybe in the country..In fact the muni. just north of Ferguson is Florissant. During the 60's and 70's the largest suburb of St Louis......Extremely well policed....Very restrictive city ordinances, and a well paid well trained police department..That whole area was considered a hands off by professional criminals as the story went.....The detective bureau was considered one of the best in the county..Well paid, well equipped and backed by the administration 100%...Sad to see that Ferguson having problems....Both departments had excellent reputations....The suburbs aren't what they used to be.

Well this is 40 - 50 years later and the demographics have skewed dramatically. Assuming that you are caucasian, you wold be greatly in the minority. Probably the only one. the last I heard the Lowry family still had control of the Florissant City Hall and police department. No such control in Ferguson.

Speaking of,just read another story involving that place. Someone was stupid enough to pull a gun on a policeman--he got shot but survived. Some insane "'thinking"" going on in that guys mind.

O' yes I knew Bob the elder well...During his time as Chief of Detectives and Major Case Commander he was one of the best...He and Vassel at the county had the best list of snitches around. I can't even imagine that kind of thing going on in those days..Florissant had a lot of former St. Louis Metro officers that switched due to St. Louis city residence requirements....Tough bunch well equipped and known that they would be backed up by his honor James J. Eagen.....I think you are right the Lowery sons still have something to do with the department..Sounds like you were in the vicinity..Bob did retire as Mayor about a year or two ago..I haven' even been in the city for years..One of the Lowery's was teaching some courses at FLETC about a year or so ago...

I'm just watching. Been there many times, still occasionally go to Pirones for pizza.

I don't understand the rioting and the demands of the so-called "civic leaders". They want the St. Louis Co. Prosecutor to resign, the police chief to resign, and the police officer involved in jail?!? Totally preposterous!!! All of this without knowing what actually happened!!!

I'm still waiting to see what the investigation reveals.

I don't know the facts of the shooting, though it sounds as if it's worthy of full investigation. But the people howling because the officer hasn't been identified seem to overlook the fact that there have been death threats against him. And according to one city official someone posted a picture of the police chief's house online, urging people to go make is life extremely unpleasant--as in assault.

Again, I don't know the facts; but I think I would quietly be getting the officer to a place of safety to do the investigation.

As it stands now, nothing has been released that would place the young man, Mike Brown, age 18, in any prior trouble. It truly sounds like his mother and father tried very hard to keep him on track.

The St. Louis County prosecutor announced that all findings on this case will be presented to a Grand Jury for determination of charges or lack of.

I think that is a wise move.

Not specific to this incident, but I've never understood the self destruction by the community. Not only does it destroy the community in the short term (literally), no one in their right mind is going to invest the time and money needed to rebuild.

A St. Louis Post Dispatch reporter posed the very same question to a "community leader." The theory voiced was that destroying the community would bring government relief funds in much quicker, to aid in the "rebuilding" effort.

Does anyone know the history of the deceased, prior record? I believe he is a juvenile so it may not be available, or he may not have had any problems.
Steve W.

Well let's look at it this way.... what was going on to cause the police to be called to the scene in the first place? Could it be that some law breaking was going on? I suspect so. I doubt they stopped by to check Mr. Brown's license for his lemonade stand. There's a saying "Don't start anything, and there won't be anything." Supposedly after the police showed up, there was a scuffle of some sort and someone went for the officer's gun.

We'll just have to wait and see if this was a justifiable shooting or not, as I think only the officer and the "victim" know the real truth. But regardless of what really happened, it's no excuse for the rioting and looting that's going on now.
