Help me solve an argument: Does driving a Ford Crown Vic make me an old man?

No such thing. I work with police cars. Have about 500 of them on my lot. Basically the same as an LX model with suspension upgrades, larger hoses, ...There are a lot of minor differences but overall its the same car. A police interceptor has 15 more horses, about 240. Still cant keep up with a 6 cyl Maxima, Acura, or Toyota.

Wow. If he'd known that, Jake never would have agreed with the new Bluesmobile......

A 97 Ford Crown Vic with only 60K on the odo for $4K OTD? I'd have bought that in a heartbeat. That's one of the last true good body-on-frame sedans ever.

Is it an old-man's car? Who cares. It's a great car, it's got a comfortable ride, it's roomy.

They look like undercover cop cars and people drive too slow in front of you on 2 lane roads. Gangbangers like them with rubber band tires and 3 foot wheels.

Move to Philly, tint the windows, install thumping stereo, spinner rims, oversized low profile tires and you can join "The Crown Vic Boyz"!

I'd still have mine but Jr. wanted to trade his crew cab Silverado for a Toyota and I didn't want to let the Silverado go. We traded the Crown instead and I took over the Silverado. I've driven them at work for the last 43 years and owned over a dozen of them. Good gas mileage and lots of room. I've never cared what anybody thinks about my ride.

Missus P&R Fan is irked at me. The other day a friend of mine called from the dealership he sells for and told me they had a '97 Ford Crown Victoria traded in with 67,000 miles on it. I could have it for Four Grand.:D
I immediately bought it, and now SWMBO is mad. She says it's an "Old People Car". Uh, no, Doll, it's a nice, comfortable, safe car. We had a '91 Grand Marquis and an '88 Lincoln Town Car. I loved 'em all. Now, it's only for the aged. I'm 47, she's 51. We're nowhere near old, although with my really cool gray hair I regularly get offered Senior Citizen Discounts, which I gladly accept as the Fiscal Conservative I am.
So, anyway, what do Ya'll think. Is this an "Old Peoples Car", or is she full of beans?
I'm sure all you LEOs out there can speak with some authority, as this is one of the classic patrol cars.
Help me out, so I can be vindicated.
Jim

Sir, sorry to say, but SWMBO is correct.

Hope this helps, and Semper Fi.

Ron H.

I've got one, and I'm hardly an old man. I bought her 10 years ago and keep her garaged when I travel. She has around 120,000 miles on her and I have absolutely no intention of getting rid of her.

Well, it's kind of a Crown Vic. It's a 2003 Mercury Marauder. Black.

My buddy at work (if I ever get back!) has one. For gentle cruising to get lunch it seems ok, and yes, he is old. However, it wallows about in a way that says "don't even think about driving me fast". Maybe he just needs new shocks.

Unless it has some serious aftermarket upgrades, and I mean WAY beyond any police car, the Crown Vic does not come with handling and braking. Coming from England I just do not buy cars that cannot go around corners and fry the brakes if you use them hard twice in a mile.

Well , if the unthinkable happens and ya get in a head-on with some newfangled front-wheel drive eco-friendly hybrid shoebox driven by some young-un who drifted into your lane while talking or texting , we'll see who continues to get any older.

My bet is on the 'old man' driving 2-1/2 tons of Dearborns V8-powered , full-framed beast.

Even the old people stopped buying them in large enough numbers...they quit making them!

Still cant keep up with a 6 cyl Maxima, Acura, or Toyota.

We catch them in the corners....I used to catch 50 Mustangs all day long in a Dodge Diplomat 318/2bbl. Big horsepower is fairly low on the list of what makes a great police car great these days.

My wife had a '92 Grand Marquis she traded for a '99 which she drove for 9 years until she gave it to our niece. Zero issues with either ride.

Did you know.....

You can put 7 stud-length 2x4's in a Grand Marques?

And....

They WILL scratch the dashboard!:o

I also have a big black Mercury Marauder. I might be old [67] but the car keeps me feeling young.

Well to be fair police dont really need a car with a lot of horsepower. They are not in car chases all day long.

As for which car will hold up better a CV or a small front wheel drive car. They are about the same. A lot depends on the impact zone and speed but they all have to meet the same standards. We buy CVs from Taxes to Va. Big departments sell them as a set. "Here are 10 cars take it or leave it". At least one or two are smashed and trust me they hold up about as well as a Civic. Nothing special or secretive about them. If i dont forget i'll take some pics on monday.

And Ford never really fixed the issue of exploding gas tanks!

I am 57 years old. Yes, it is an old mans car. There is no running away from the fact that we get older every day. If it was a good deal, just drive it and try to enjoy it.

I live in Florida and can tell you for a fact it will only look like an old man's car if you put a "dingleberry ball" on the tip of your radio antenna.
All you need to do is put dark tint on the windows and get black rims!
