The greatest disservice to this country was making it that a person has to be "a danger to themselves or someone else" to get them help. I understand the mental health facilities back in the day were not good but we are doing such harm to these people now. It is only a matter of time until they are a danger to themselves or someone else. This is a case in point.

If the energy people use to get rid of firearms was used to get people mental health, sometimes involuntary help, then this problem would get solved.
 
No one wants to foot the bill for problems due to other people's misconduct.
In the "Bad Old Days" the idea was if someone refused to show consideration for others then they had to be isolated until they were either "cured" or learned to behave.
Ronald George presided over the trial of Angelo Buono, one the Hillside Stranglers. When asked if people like Buono should be declared "mental cases" Ronald George replied:
"Why should we label someone as insane when they refuse to live by society's rules ?"
