Bye, bye, Remington...

I doubt it. Looks like about 98% of the workers at Remington are unionized. Not too many Republicans in the unions. At least they don't VOTE that way.

I think unions need to be smashed and banned-like what the late great Margaret Thatcher did in England.

I would hazard a guess, that typically, upstate NY voters are, contrary to popular belief, conservative republicans. Simply look at the legislature in upstate NY....our elected officials, the majority, Republican, Conservative.

But I agree with you, there is more to this move than protesting the NY Safe Act by Remington. I suspect the company saw an opportunity to exploit that excuse and move to an area less unionized for obvious reasons. I don't want to wander into political barbwire, so I will say no more on this subject. It's not good news for all the "common" NY workers at Remington who were not invited to go along or who couldn't afford to uproot their family to go along after years working for the company. That is sad. Yeah man, we'll show them.....

You know, as I sit here finishing out my work day and reading some of the replies regarding the reaction to bonehead decisions made by "government" I can't help but compare the "government" to a Hollywood starlet. Her boobs are too small and her nose is too big. Solution: Slice on the nose and augment the boobs until the nose is gone and all you have left are boobs.

BTW, New York is one of the top 9 states that people are leaving for other areas. MA and CT are also on the list.

Just don't come to Texas for the jobs and low taxes, then expect everything else to be just like the people's utopia you migrated from.

I'm sure no forum members are like this, but I've encountered way too many rust-belt Yankees who bitch that it's not like the place they came from. Of course, if you ask why they don't go back, the answer is "cause <manufacturer name here> laid me off and I couldn't find a job."

But, of course, they still want the unions, gun control, welfare, a state income tax, regulation, and all the other **** that caused the plant to close.

Sorry, it's package deal: take the job, you get the Bubbas, heat, accents, "fixin too", no basements, no public transportation, and people who address you as Sir and Ma'am.

You can bet that Remington management watched what happened to Winchester with a keen interest. They have probably wanted to move for awhile. The SAFE ACT just gives them an excuse to do so with minimum bad publicity. They will point their fingers at that legislation but really folks it is all about the bottom line. The company has to answer to stockholders and make money. The politicians have taken Remington for granted and figured that they would never move their operations. Remington will have the last say in this matter. The employees will be the ones to suffer.

This stumps me too. The reason I want to move is that I don't like where I am and want a place more in line with my politics, values, and beliefs.

The thing about Texas, is that you can find just about anything you want. Like snow? Head up to the panhandle, I'm told they have it. Like desert? Head out to the Permian Basin. Liberal? Austin is the place for you. Like it hot and humid? Houston. Want to live in a place that's kind of like New York City, but not? Dallas. Want to live in the west? Fort Worth. Want rural? You can get as rural you as you want in parts of Texas.

Other states are probably similar, but I've traveled to Texas more than most other places, so I have a better idea of what it's like.

If you like where you are, don't move. Just don't move and expect the natives to change to suit your tastes.

:p

Well I have over 42 years as a union pipefitter in upstate NY and let me tell you not all union people are lockstep democrats. Most of the guys are car people, hunters and shooters and they vote RIGHT.

Basically to get to high office though you must be liberal and of course spout the party doctrine. Were always told what candidate in THEIR OPINION is the best and of course all guidance from our much higher ups in Washington is of the same type.

I know a few people in that plant/area and I know for a fact they are far from being in love with NYC politics!

SO to think all union people are totally one way is wrong.

Boys I can hear it now. Some jake leg liberal NY politician running for the next election. "And I was instrumental in getting Remington, the vile and despictable maker of fully automatic assualt weapons to exit this state. Had it not been for me and several other outstanding members of my party they would still be plying their trade here in New York. Thank goodness we were able to FINALLY get this done---------------"

I betcha.

An equally similar previous event would be the Ithaca Gun Company - after being forced to close in New York due to polluting Fall Creek with lead (complete with an attempted Superfund Remediation), and a failed attempt to relocate to Colorado, Ithaca is now alive and well in Upper Sandusky, Ohio - which is closer to Canada than Mexico.

Well that's just great. You mean to tell me Ithaca is now being built by the French?

It's not at all safe to make that assumption. What the union leadership says and what the rank and file do are often far apart. A lot also has to do with what union the workers are in. Smaller, local unions tend to be less involved in politics than large national unions.

It's sort of like stereotyping all gun owners as one kind of person.

Watching the Olympics last night I had to laugh when I saw a commercial advertising New York State as business friendly. Apparently they recently launched a national ad campaign encouraging businesses to relocate to the State of New York to take advantage of their "tax free zones" and "pay no taxes for 10 years". For a minute, I thought I had bumped the remote and tuned in Saturday Night Live.

Apparently someone in Albany is either really sick or has a pretty good sense of humor.
I see the same ads here and practically laugh myself sick.

But why should anybody be surprised when the delusional have delusions?

Ohio already has part of Ithaca. We should be going after more. I REALLY don't want us being known for Hi Point.

I realized my Renault/Fiat error, but never got around to correcting it.
It's all good. I'm from Southeast Michigan, so I'm surrounded by Chrysler, Ford, and GM.

Seems as though Chrysler just got all the Daimler paint removed from their trucks, now they need to paint Fiat in it's place.
