Glad you are on the way. The research into artistic quality and hygiene are priceless, and as noted, good ink ain't cheap; cheap ain't good. I have 5, all covered by short sleeve shirts (mostly; one is somewhat exposed but not easy to see and understand without a bit of time).
The first (upper left arm) was a rott head surrounded by the words "Life's Short" on top, and "Bite hard" on the bottom. The next (upper right arm) was a shark with a turned head and blood trail, surrounded by the 2 bar admission dates. Below the rott head is a scale of justice copied from the state prosecutor's association web page and surrounded by "RPC 3.8" and "Do Justice" in a scroll (RPC 3.8 is a reference to Rule of Professional Conduct 3.8, the special obligations of a prosecutor). On the right arm below the shark is an anniversary tat my wife and I got together, a heard with our initials and a rottie head peeking over.
The last is 2 words, one on each tricep, displaying a phrase familiar to military and LE and used with vigor by R. Lee Ermey in the opening scene of Full Metal Jacket. The left tricep has 6 letters that will get * out on this forum, and the right has "yourself".

They are in military stencil style, all black. It is a bit of a joke at work; I can tap my arms as a message to other attorneys that have made an error, or make references of other subtle nature ("counsel, do I need to wear short sleeves to court as a refresher?"), that kind of thing.
I am considering, for after retirement, a knuckle tat on each hand, one with "FYVM", and the other with "NMFP", for phrases I have been known to use to express my compassion or lack thereof.
