What is “the south”

When you refer to the civil war and the local corrects you and says no it is the war of northern aggression. You are in the south

:D A good friend moved to Tennessee in 2005. I told him to always use the norther aggression line if the war came up. Make more friends faster that way.

Note I had the good times of working with a bunch of serious Southron people years ago and we got along great!

The south is that other side where some northerners think the grass is always greener.
Its also where insurrectionists were soundly whooped by the powerful, just and victorious North and left to subsist on okra.

Subsist on okra??? Hush yo mouth.
All that Italian food is OK but down here it is fried or boiled.
I would not trade and big plate of fried chicken, okra and purple hull peas for all the pizza in the world. One is allowed to substitute fried catfish, boiled shrimp or mudbugs for the chicken depending on the days find.
LOL

I love everything you list...EXCEPT OKRA! I could never choke it down, no matter how hard my mother tried.

Pete, we were in Greenville SC about a year+ ago. Looking for lunch one day we stumbled upon a little place on a side street.
Italian in the interior of SC?
It is called Belladinas on W. Washington St. When we walked in we knew we were in the right place, the staff looked straight out of The Godfather.
The owner told me they escaped from NYC. They treated us real well, the food was genuine. No chain garbage.
Who woulda thunk it?

Portafino on Hayward St. in front of the mall is OK too in Greenville

I had my first boiled peanut from a roadside vendor. Wife wanted them. I opened one peanut, put it in my mouth, chewed and spit it out. Never to be repeated.

Something else I notice about the Savannah area. There are no dandelions. Small little tasty leaves needed for salads with oil and vinegar

The dandelions are all in the wine.

For many, the South is an idea without a future
and a past that is ever fading away.

For me, its the past ever fading away.

Check out the paintings in this link:

The artist is my cousin. The black iron wash pot in Washday now holds flowers on my front porch. Milkin, Gatherin Eggs and Breakin Corn are an Aunt and Uncle. Spent many days napping away the mid day heat in the Puttin In barn before going back out into the fields for the afternoon. Toppin and Suckerin Tobacco is the job us kids did hour after hour, day after day.
Thats the South I remember and loved, but its gone now along with the people that made it special for me. The throngs of people moving there now would have hated what it was, but I loved it.
And boiled peanuts are a favorite, my Aunt sends fresh peanuts every year for us to boil.

West Virginia is Appalachian, not Southern. East Tennessee is more Appalachian than Southern, whereas west Tennessee is Southern.

I think of Kentucky is rural, but not Southern.

I have lots of relatives in Arkansas. I would say central, east, and delta regions of Arkansas are Southern. Northwest Arkansas is Southern in location only, culturally it's heavily influenced by the influx of northerners and Left coasters.

Here is Mississippi, we are deep south.
I like your explanation . Good job .

"Almost, makes me want to buy a 68 or 69 Dodge Charger!!!

The Stars and Bars. What a great flag.

Well! I was born in Fayetteville, North Carolina, and it almost makes me want to buy a Dodge Charger... My SIL is stationed at FT. Lee,,, or as the phlebes like to call it FT Greg-Adams. FT Bragg is now what??

I can remember my Dad used to haul a lot of Airborne at Bragg in the C-119, he asked my MOM, to pick him up at the drop zone. He was dropping troops, and saw our car, then he saw the MP's had pulled, over and were harassing my "Very Pretty" MOM, asking her what she was doing and why she was there? They were over the line, and when she got very uncomfortable and scared, she pulled a Beretta on them! They were in the process of backing up and backing off, when my DAD taxied up in a cloud dust in the C-119, my Dad hopped off, and came walking up to them and asked them what the hell they thought they were doing??

Those those Gents got two surprises, but I'll guarantee you my DAD, was the one that made them **** their pants, he was NOT somebody that you wanted to piss off...

I live in the North. My hunting camp is in the South. If anybody saw it they would most assuredly say it is part of heaven. It is located just one road north of Pennsylvania.

I was a world traveler for business. Often I had to travel to plants in the "South". The Plant Manager in one particular location always called me a Yankee and would not spend much time with me. Then, one year he had a major problem and reluctantly "allowed" me to come down. in 2 days I fixed the mechanical issues and put the plant profitable again. No more Yankee talk and I was a friend now.

It is what it is and it is what you make of it. The way I look at is that we are all Americans and as long as we stick together we will all be as one.

You're in "the South" when in a restaurant you order iced tea and you don't have to tell the waitress you want "sweet"

Jim this is true. A lot of people think all of NY is NY City. Ask Marshawn Lynch. That idiot thought Lake Erie was the Ocean. When I show people pics of my hunting camp in NY they can’t believe it’s in NY. I hunt oak ridges and benches at 2300’.

Hiring Marshawn showed what morons the bosses really were. To think that OUR tax dollars actually paid his salary is sickening.

A French company that I once consulted for came to the USA for instructions. While eating Beef On Weck along the Niagara they thought the river was a lake. When they hosted me over there, their rivers were full of raw sewage and smelled as such.

My camp mountain tops 2600 feet. We call it "Starry Mountain". Being six miles from even the smallest city, the sight looking up at night cannot be described in words.
