I found this at a local show today. According to S&W Standard Catalog #4 478 2 inch gun were made between 1987 and 1993.

Roy Jinks advises shipped April 1993 but was not shipped to NYPD. There were some overruns sold through dealers.

The gun is double action only and it has a very smooth DA pull so I will shoot it and may carry it.
EDIT:
The 4" square butt and 2" round butt came from the same NYPD officer. The 4" rode with around Harlem and Washington Heights. He bought the 2" from another cop and carried it mostly off duty. I like a good history / story more than anything else. Much preferred over "new in box." These NY-1 guns, many of them, have been around the block a few times. My favorite thing about these two guns is that I got to speak with the officer who carried them. He probably thought that I was nuts, with all my ridiculous questions. A couple years later he found the Cobra OWB / IWB holsters and send them to me, no charge.

I have a DAO 64 with 4" barrel (some sort of LE trade in but isn't marked anywhere). It has a great DA pull and shoots lights out. It's the one revolver where I can shoot DA as well as single action on any of my other revolvers.

A hard to find 4" round butt is listed in the classifieds. Took me awhile to find one myself.
Took me a long time to find one as well. Got lucky. Saw it listed on GB with Pachmayr stocks that concealed the round butt. Looked like a square butt....until the 20th or so picture with grips removed. I've since come across a few round butts by checking beneath the grips.

I have a 64-6 in the same configuration. It is not an NY-1, but was nearly new when I bought it a few years back. I swapped out the factory goodyears for some magnas and a Tyler T. It had a very smooth, but horrendously heavy trigger. Swapped a couple of springs out with the Wolff "factory standard" ones and it makes a real nice jacket pocket carry gun.

I found this one NIB a couple of years ago.
I think it was one of the ones that was sold to the public after the NYPD no longer authorized their people to carry them. From what I've read there are a couple of versions. I think this one is a later one.
It does have a noticeably shorter trigger pull, before the hammer drops, compared to any of my other S&W revolvers.

I also have a RB 4" LEO Model 64 DAO trade in that is my go to DA revolver for target practice. (it would also be a great, truck, house or carry gun) Action is unbelievably smooth. I don't know how they spec'd these out but they are definitely nicer than the standard Model 10 or 64 actions.

Yeah I have no clue what makes the trigger pull special but it is real nice. Best $200 gun I've ever bought or shot!! If I had a guaranteed pull like that in my other revolvers, I'd drop that hammer into my 686 and 681 in a heartbeat!

I bought that one this morning
Spoke with the detective it was issued to on the phone this evening. Really nice dude. Says he hasn't shot it since 1990 because he hates cleaning revolvers. Haha!
Worst part is though... now I'll need a NY-1 2" RB to go with it
